boarding school help!!

I am looking into going to boarding school for my tenth grade year, that would be 08-09. I missed the deadline this year sigh. I have a few questions about what boarding school is like. How much homework etc? Just basics questions. I am looking into Choate, St. Pauls, Phillips Andover and Exter, the hill, Peddie, Deerfiel, and Lawrenceville and others I find:). I was wondering if anyone knows the personalities of those schools and what is boarding school like? Just anything you can tell me would be very appreciated!! <3 THANKS caitlin

And what school, if any, do you currently attend?

Also how hard is applying? Sorry so many additional posts:)

I am also looking to apply for a boarding school in 08-09, but for my freshman year. I have been looking ar exeter, andover, choate, and st. paul's like you! Exeter and Andover are probably the most well known and give an excellent education. Kids from there as well as the other schools u mentioned are good for getting into an ivy/elite college. I was interested in Lawrenceville at one time but someone told me that it isn't a "real" boarding school. I don't really know what that means.

Andover and Exter are by far the best out of my choices, but I heard they are extremelly difficult. I would say Saint Pauls is my favorite and Choate my least favorite. I have just found this small school, Hebron that I like also. Choices to make lol and I guess maybe Lawrenceville doesnt have a ton of boarders. I have really no idea :)

it's Exeter* and Deerfield*. If you want an idea about how difficult it is to get in, look at this year's posts and "chances" threads.

St. Paul's is harder to get into than Andover and Exeter.

"St. Paul's is harder to get into than Andover and Exeter"
that's not quite true. I mean technically yes, but dude, the acceptance rate is only like 1 or 2 % different..it's insignificant.

Deerfield - 16%
St Pauls - 19%
Hotchkiss - 20%
Andover - 20%
Exeter - 22%
Choate - 32%
from petersons..

I know there's not much of a difference, but I was just saying....

Those are innacurate, I think.. I think Andover was 21% this year and Exeter was 20 or 21%..and the SPS admissions site says "1 in 5".

edit:
And I thought we already went over how the statistics are highly skewed in this case... 40% legacy, lower average measures of merit (low SSAT scores, indicating preference not for the highest achieving, but for legacies, etc.).

i was using last year's figure on peterson's..some schools havent released this year's figures yet... I would expect every school's to go lower so it'll be the same thing

19% could be 1 in 5...it's easier to understand 1 in 5 in context.

lol. I can assure you that Lawrenceville is a "real" boarding school. It's roughly 70% boarding, 30% day students, which is similar to all the other major boarding schools (other than St. Pauls, which is 100% boarding).

Thanks for replying and I am sorry I spelt deerfield and Exeter wrong I was in a hurry but can anyone help me with my other questions. How is boarding school, how much homework etc??? Thank you so much!

You should just look through the archives on here and you'll know everything you need to know.

Depending on what school you attend, homework is rarely less than 3 hours and commonly between 5 and 6, and often times up to 8 hours (all-nighters aren't uncommon). Source: students and archives.

Most schools say that for every hour of class, you should receive one hour of homework. So, in Exeter for example, you would get about 4-5 hours of work on average because there are 4-5 classes per day. Exeter also has a "rule" that no class can give out more than an hour's work per day.

I think you should go visit the schools first. It really helped me make up my decision on the schools. Before the first visit I didn't like Choate at all, but after the visit I fell in love with it and decided to go after I got accepted.

Some of these schools will allow you to visit now without having an interview. If you live somewhat close to any boarding schools, I recommend touring now. By the 3rd week of May, many schools may not allow a casual tour because of graduation and final exams. Touring different types of schools will help you set your criteria for your fall tours. As you develop your list of schools for your fall tour, you would be wise to include a few schools that you can love but are not the most competitive.

I am thinking of applying to 8-10 schools, is that to many? I am just very worried since there are not a lot of open spots in grade 10.

Although St Pauls is my favorite thus far :)

Prettyckitty applied to around ten schools and was accepted at almost all of them.
