Best business major for a student with many interest

I have many different interests in the business world and am unsure what to major in within the college of business that would work in any area. I have an interest in the fashion world and also like learning about and managing money. I also want to one day open a retail store. What’s a versatile business major that would work everywhere. I am also allowed a double major if anyone has suggestions.

Most people get accounting degrees with the goal to become a CPA, and it sounds like you wouldn’t be interested in that.

Are you planning to go the CPA route? If so, I say no problem double majoring in a subject matter you find interesting.

If you’re looking to work in marketing, then having an understanding of accounting could perhaps help open you up to positions in financial services.

Either way, I don’t think either side would see it as problematic.

Agree, I don’t see it as a problem. I just would just: 1) not spend extra money or stay longer in college to get the double major and 2) be sure you keep the workload manageable with the extra classes. If the double major is too much you can consider doing a minor in marketing.

Are you already at a school? If so, can you post which concentrations they have?

You have five or so threads here asking if you should major in accounting, finance, marketing, do a double major etc. Nobody here knows you and nobody here should answer this for you. You need to consider your short-term and long-term career goals, think about which classes that you have found interesting and seem to have an aptitude for and go from there. Take advantage of the resources available at your college to help you figure things out – seek input of professors in different disciplines, talk to people in career services, look at the coursework you would have to take with each major etc.

@creativecritic

I just looked at your previous threads and seriously? I took time out of my busy day to respond to you on multiple occasions and you just rudely ignore me and others?

Would a double major in marketing and accounting be a disadvantage? I have a love for both and would like to run my own business one day. Both are useful in my opinion and would only require 3 extra classes to complete both.

I didn’t Make you respond to my post or take time out of your “busy day” to say anything to me. I can seek as much advice as I would like . Ignoring you and considering other pieces of advice are two totally different things. I suggest you get back to your busy day and not take everything to heart @philbegas

@creativecritic Going forward if you want to ask the same/similar question it is protocol on CC to take your old thread and bump it up rather than start a new thread. That way both new and old posters can see earlier responses.

  1. Letting people know you are seeing their advice and thinking it over is just common decency.
  2. It's a waste of everybody's time to start a million threads because a lot more could be learned and talked about in depth if you collected it into one or two threads.

ACCOUNTING!! It is the language of business, and even if you don’t want to go the CPA route, it will definitely give you an advantage in managing money. Many CEOs have degrees in accounting because they understand the inner workings of business.

I own four small businesses with about a hundred employees. If you ever want to own a business or be an executive, you will be better at the job with an Accounting degree. You will be a better budgeter, manager, and more profitable if you can master your financials. Leave the bookkeeping to someone else, but having command of your numbers will make you successful. If I’m looking at a dozen resumes, an accounting degree stands out above a general business degree because I can see the candidate has displayed some vital business discipline. Of course, I have to interview him/her to make sure she can speak with humans and interact successfully. My ideal hire out of college is someone with an accounting degree who was in a fraternity or sorority. That gives me good initial insight into their skill set.
