It’s easy to be selective when you’re regarded as the “most selective” public campus in the 3rd largest state. That doesn’t say very much about the actual quality of the school (although the 322nd overall ranking that Forbes gives is pretty dismal).

Many kids with very high stats will find tuition free education at several places and wil have a choice. If you have top stats, you do not have to limit yourself with any particular school. Apply widely, see which offer is the best for the value that you get.

Something seems to be going on at Geneseo that is perplexing. We’ve had three students in the past two years admitted that had significantly lower stats than those rejected in previous years. They had no hooks…and stats much lower than kids admitted through “special talents” were told they had to get in previous years.

Is it a gender thing? My understanding is that states that have a liberal arts college as part of their university system end up asking for different stats for girls than boys, since boys often want to go to a school with a good football team. I’ve seen this at St. mary’s college in the U MD system, as well as William and Mary in A.

Geneseo’s pretty good for a small, liberal arts SUNY school. Sure, it may be the most selective in the state, but Binghamton is a tad more prestigious…maybe Bing gets more competitive applicants?

Being the most selective public school in the 3rd largest state really doesn’t say much considering the SUNY system doesn’t have a “flagship” school.

Quoting 4kidsdad: “It is kinda selective. Admits only students with 93-94 (out of 100) or better GPA.”

While selective, the average HS GPA of admits is an A- (3.70). If you look at what Geneseo indicates are most important in making admissions decisions it is a) rigor of curriculum and b) standardized test scores. I know plently of B+ students who have been admitted to Geneseo but most of them had 1850+ SAT scores. You can access more ifo regarding admissions stats here: http://www.geneseo.edu/webfm_send/6480

Geneseo admits a fair number of students for spring admit or deferred admissions that are unaccounted for in their fall admissions stats that are published.

…yes they have been doing this, especially with legacies for the past couple of years, but this year we had a couple of students accepted RD, no hooks, not in top 10% of class, with SAT’s of approx 1100.

csdad – Interesting that you say that. I know of 3 unhooked students in our local high school who were accepted at Geneseo this year who almost certainly would not have been accepted 2 years ago. What precisely this means, if anything, I don’t claim to know.

Yes, just 3 years ago when my D visited as a HS Junior, they were touting 1340 average SAT numbers, the Harvard of the publics, etc., etc…just two years ago I had one of their coaches tell me that one of our girls he was recruiting, who was in the top ten in her class, had to get at least an 1190 SAT for him to get her in on “special Talent” & I know that she was his #1 recruit…I don’t know what is happening there.

Yes. I do believe the numbers are not accurate because the lower stats for the high number of deferred admissions kids are not included in the common data stats that show fall admission numbers. I know that kids who are deferred until spring are not always going to offer this info to everyone, so that may account for some of the lower stats for admitted students.
