do they send out letters saying you are not selected as a finalist?

My D received a finalist email also!

I'm a finalist!

do they base finalists according to the best buy location? i live in an area with a lot of competitive schools, and i know a bunch load of kids who applied.

i'm pretty sure i didn't get it, but congratulations to all you guys!

I'm a finalist too!

To ahhhhhhhhhh: No, that just means you're advancing to the next round. You can win $0, $1500, or $10000. On the Best Buy website, it said that they award 1500 one-time $1500 scholarships and an additional 51 one-time $10000 scholarships.

To jadore_isabella: I think that they base it by Best Buy location. Why else would they have us write in the store number on the forms that we have to submit?

Congrats to all who are finalists!

yay finalist too!

does anyone have the statistics?? like how many finalists are selected and how do they award the prizes. i don't know how they could judge with just a transcript and a short blurb of two community service activities and job. it seems to me that the finalists would already have excellent grades and community service, so how could they go on from there?

Were you supposed to send a transcript when you first applied to the scholarship? I though you only had to do that if you were selected as a finalist...

omg...still haven't received anything yet...

no all i did was complete the online application, so you weren't supposed to send a transcript when you first apply.

ugh, i haven't received anything. =[

sigh...are they done sending out stuff?

I hope not. The website says "Finalists will receive further notification via email by April 1."

So maybe they will keep notifying people until then? I HOPE SO!

I got an email yesterday night that I qualified as a finalist! I am so excited!
I was wondering though how they distinguish between those students who receive the $1,500 award and $10,000 award. Oh and for all others, no essay is required this year.

Perhaps they have some sort of formula that will calculate an Academic Index. As for community service, my guess is that they look for total number of hours and who benefited from your activities, i.e. just members of your club, the entire school, your community, etc. There must be some finalists who are more outstanding than others.

gosh, last year they alerted everyone on the 18th so I don't know...

Nothing here. I'm a little dissapointed.

When my son got this scholarship a couple years ago, almost everyone who was a finalist received the award, but I remember there were a couple finalists on here who didn't, so just wanted to give a heads-up on that.

Congrats to all the finalists and good luck!

Oh, that makes me feel better! Could you please post your son's stats (academics, volunteer activities, work experience, etc.), brainomatic? I (and I'm sure a few other CCers) would like to compare my stats to his.

Thanks!

that's great to hear brainomatic! and i agree with freespirit.. can you please post your son's stats so we can compare :)

I guess it's # for each store (1500) and 1 (10000) for each state incl. DC.
