Best car to bring

Going car shopping this summer. What are some of the most common local favorites amongst members of the UCI campus?

HAHA, I’m going car shopping too! It seems like the best idea if you don’t wanna be stuck on campus…

I’ve been eyeing the new Mustang, it’s cheap and I’m not caring so much on reliability. It really seems like a winner boasting 305hp and 31mpg highway. Plus many streets in Irvine are 50MPH speed limit (compared to my home city that tops at like 40) so that’ll be fun.

Hahaha, bravo mitthi! I’m very excited because I plan on moving to Irvine from the East Coast for grad school and I’m hoping to make a cross-country roadtrip to go out there this fall! Therefore, whatever car I’m hoping to buy will not be just a ‘commuter’ car (although that’d be nice when I actually get on campus and start navigating them parking lots) but a nice comfy dependable one as well - after all, its maiden voyage will be the ultimate across-the-USA roadtrip! So, lots of suitcases + lots of highways = no Minis or Yaris’, haha!

My dad and I are looking at small SUVs - Honda CrV or Toyota Rav4. They’d be comfy - and they’re not too big (lengthy) for commuting and parking on campus. I like SUVs personally - I don’t care that I’m a male and they’ve got a soccer mom image! :)

Also interested in Civic coupes or a Scion tC. Might also look at Nissan Rogue, or Sentra. Too many choices!

Zairair: A Mustang would be a nice looker on campus! Not the one for me, though, since they’re not quite practical for cross-country trips, which I hope to make a couple of times in the car lifetime. I did in fact take a peek at the Fusion, but I think I’m most likely going Japanese for a new vehicle.

@postgradcomp I will also be making that cross country trip from the east to the west. I would recommend a mini SUV (to help lug all your stuff) hybrid (to help save on gas while going out to Irvine and while commuting on to and from campus). There are lots of hybrids out there that could suit you such as the Ford Escape Hybrid (my car haha) or the Highlander Hybrid. Shop around and I’m sure you’ll find more! :)

your first question was what are the most common?

i havent been there yet, but i can for sure tell you civics, tegs, and rsx’s!!! lol

zairair that v6 model wont be released to next year, are you referring to the v8???

if you wanna drive stick, look at the genesis coupe =D

Really? I thought they were gonna release all the 2011 models this spring… Well F me lol.

Goldenevence - how do you like your Escape? Pros/Cons? It seems like a nice practical car to me, although I’m not going to be able to afford over 30K on the hybrid.

What do you guys like better: Civic Coupe or Scion tC?

civic coupe,

oh and zairair, im actually not sure when they’re releasing the 2011… lolw

its DI i believe?

I suggest a cheap, Japanese import, preferably one with LARGE spoilers. That’s what I hear everyone else brings.

I personally have a lifted dodge cummins diesel, but hey, I’m white.

You could bring any car, but I suggest you bring one because there’s a lot to do in the immediate area.

In Irvine you have the opportunity to drive very fast, with wider roads and a higher speed limit. You might want to buy a little sporty car and race some of the Ferraris that I see driving around here.

I had a Jeep which was nice for moving and transporting stuff.

Haha, thanks for contributing to this thread, mates.

I think I’m going to end up with a soccer-mom style small SUV, and Japanese too. Something that can do both daily commutes as well as handle perennial trips across Route 66.

I’m either bringing my current car('96 Camry 5spd), but I’m looking at getting the new 2011 Mustang, or a Civic Si… Oh the decisions!
