Best Colleges Aside from Ivy League for Economics & PoliSci

Current Highschool Sophomore here. Looking to major in Economics and minor in Political Science. Living in New Jersey.

What’re my options when it comes to this?

Seems like Rutgers is an obvious choice.

@ucbalumnus Obviously. Thank you. :slight_smile:

Take a look at Rice University! Political science in particular is pretty strong.

For an indication of strength in economics, these analyses can serve as a rough guide:

Most decent colleges will be able to give you a solid undergrad degree in poli sci. But you can’t overestimate the importance of internships these days, so for poli sci, schools that are near Washington DC or a state capital have a key advantage over other colleges.

Fortunately, lots of prominent colleges are near DC or a state capital. Those in/near state capital cities include Michigan State, Arizona State, Emory, Texas, Nebraska, Ohio State, Drake, Utah, Wyoming, Richmond, VCU, Brown, North Carolina State, South Carolina, Florida State, Louisiana State, Vanderbilt, Denver, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Providence College, Trinity (Connecticut), & all the Boston schools. Some of the state capitals are also cities with lots of corporate and financial internship opportunities as well.

Great Schools for Political Science/Government Majors

The University of Chicago takes a back seat to no one in these fields.

You should also consider Williams, Amherst, Hamilton, and Claremont McKenna.

This may be shocking but there are schools not in the ivy league that are better than most ivies in economics and poly science. On the chance you want to swap major/minor or try something else, you should definitely consider Chicago as mentioned above, Northwestern, Stanford, high reaches obviously. Then Michigan, Berkeley, Georgetown as reaches. Rutgers could be a match or safety based on your academics.
