Best Colleges For East Asian Studies

Hi, I’m looking to major in East Asian studies (and particularly focus on Korea) in the future, but it’s super hard to find information. If anyone has any insight on what colleges are known as THE top schools for East Asian Studies in general, please share your thoughts.

The only one I’ve been able to actually read about a student’s experience studying East Asian Studies is Yale. I’ve seen name drops like Columbia, Stanford, etc, but not many student experiences to accompany it. If anyone has any experience studying East Asian Studies, I would really love to hear about it!

I was also wondering how competitive it is to get into mid-level and Ivy League colleges with an East Asian Studies major? Especially since it seems like the East Asian Studies programs are often super small at colleges.

Thank you so much!

Take a look at Pitt and Michigan.

It’s definitely worthwhile investigating the big name schools but you will need a very compelling application and some good luck to actually have that option.

If you already speak Korean, you will be better served by a school that has strong graduate programs so that you can take courses beyond the basics.

AU offers a BA in Asian Studies, with the option to concentrate on certain countries (China, India, Japan, Korea) or disciplines (history and politics, arts and culture, philosophy and religion).

You might also be interested in AU’s International Studies major with a concentration in East Asia.
