Best colleges that care more about test scores than GPA?

As the title suggests, I am trying to come up with a list of schools that kids with high ACT/SAT can go even with a less-than-stellar GPA. Since most big state schools have such a wide range of GPA and ACT, lets keep this down to prestigious small to medium sized schools!

It’s hard to give good advice without more specific information about your stats and preferences.

You might have a look at some of the Colleges That Change Lives (other than Reed or Whitman).
http://www.ctcl.org/colleges/list

@tk21769‌ Here are my stats:

ACT: 31
Weighted GPA: 3.6
UW GPA: 3.0
ECs:
400+ hours of community service
2 jobs (one of which is frequent)
Captain of state finalist volleyball team
Captain of nationally competing club VB team
Hooks: I’m Catholic, so maybe that will help with some Christian schools?
High School: Top ten public schools in
Illinois

Schedule: All honors and AP classes
Grade Trend: 0.27 junior year GPA dip

I’m applying to Villanova, Bentley, fordham, northeastern and several match/safety schools in the Midwest. My goal is to get into a good business school either in or outside of Boston or NYC. I am trying to figure out if the east coast schools I listed are matches or reaches (I’m hearing mostly high-matches). I would like some more solid matches on the east coast if I could find some. My main concern is the junior year gpa dip and a below average gpa for some of the schools. Hopefully my ACT and ECs will help make up for it! If you have any suggestions or tips, I would be extremely grateful!

Thanks!

What is your major?

How much will your family pay each year? Since your GPA may hurt you at the schools that give the best aid, the amount that your family will pay will make a difference.

Is your weighted GPA on your transcript?

I don’t think prestigious schools are going to accept a 3.0 UW GPA. That is just too low for these schools.

And don’t assume that the better publics will ignore your GPA. The better publics often have 75% of their incoming frosh class with a 3.5+ GPA.

Can you clarify? Have your parents said that they will pay $60k+ for any school that you want? If not, then money may definitely be the deciding factor…otherwise how will school get paid for.

Do you realize that YOU can only borrow 5,500 for frosh year?

@mom2collegekids‌ Transcript is unweighted and weighted. Money is going to be part of the consideration, but not all of it. Right now I’m fine with taking money out of the picture until I get my admissions results. I’m fortunate enough to have my parents pay for part of my college. I want to go into business. As for prestigiousness, I don’t mean top 20, but maybe top 100 or 150. Right now my favorites are Fordham, Northeastern, Bentley and Villanova. I’m not sure if I’ll get into those (what do you think?). If not, I’d like to have a few more options on the east coast (preferably near NYC or Boston).

Thanks!

It’s not a good idea to wait until you get admissions results…what if all the admissions are at schools that are more than your parents will pay.

When you say that your parents will pay for “part”…how much is part? That is important info so that you can be sure to apply to 2-3 schools that you will know for sure will be affordable…so you will have choices if other schools don’t work out.

@mom2collegekids‌ I have 4 schools in my list that will be affordable for sure (including one full tuition). I’m just trying to find some schools that are alternatives and that I have a decent chance at admissions, even if they have a higher cost. Do you think you know of any? It would be extremely helpful! Thanks again for your tips/suggestions.

Susquehanna, Alleghany, Xavier

Xavier is one of my safety schools. Should I move it up to a match do you think? My ACT is alot higher (7 points) than their average. And I believe my GPA is also much higher!

great volleyball experience. is there any chance you would want to play in college, and have any college coaches expressed any interest in recruiting you? what is your coach saying about playing college?

That 3.0 is killing you, but a coach’s intercession could turn the tables.

Have you gone on to Parchment.com? If you input your information it will show you how you stack up against previous students who were accepted and predict your chances of acceptance. I think Xavier could be a safety. Why don’t you apply to a school with rolling admissions such as your local state university to give you peace of mind?

I have had a few interested coaches, but I could only go D3, and no college that I would want to go to offers D3 volleyball unfortunately.

Where are you from? If you’re from the Philadelphia/NYC area, I think Fordham or Villanova for business will be reaches. Your ACT is in range, but may not be excellent enough to overcome the lowish GPA. But if you’re from the Midwest/South/or West Coast, I think your geographic diversity would help you a lot with either of those schools. Northeastern has gotten super hot so I think that one is a super stretch and I’m not sure how much geographic diversity will help there.

I don’t know anything about Bentley.

How about St. Joe’s in Philadelphia? They have a very well regarded business school and I think you’d be good to go, and if you’re a boy, you’d probably get in the 15k to 20k merit scholarship.

Villanova has gotten tougher lately, too, OP.

Being male is a plus at many LACs (which also have D3 sports). Are you not looking at any LACs at all?

If you don’t get in to BC/Babson/Bentley, frankly, UofI seems like your best bet.

I just don’t see the wisdom of paying twice as much for Villanova/NEU or even Fordham, even if you get in.

^yep.

The following is from Xavier’s website:
middle 50% GPA: 3.21 - 3.86
middle 50% ACT: 23 - 27
middle 50% SAT: 1030 - 1200

Depending on whether they are measuring weighted or unweighted, your GPA is either slightly above average or well below average. I would not assume Xavier to be a safety.

Any other opinions?

Bump?
