Best colleges to play or watch men's soccer?

I realize this may be a very small thread. :)

Anyone's kid play or watch soccer in college.

Is soccer big on any college campus? I went to the Cal-UCLA and the Cal-Stanford games (men's) in the last two weeks and the attendance was pretty good.
I think it was 800 for the UCLA game and the Stanford game looked just as crowded.

The people in attendance didn't look like college kids though. There were a lot of youth players and geezers at the games.

I don't reaally know the best ones, but my son has a friend at UCLA on a soccer scholarship. Suppose to be an awesome player, from the bay area. He seemed to think this was an awesome team and getting on was a nice opportunity.

None of my Ds, who have all played soccer since they were five, are playing at college, other than intermurals but my D2 has a good friend who plays for Princeton and they have an exciting team, who got off to a slow start this year but had a strong finish. They were Ivy League Champions last year as well as Final Four NCAA. This friend was a first team All American last year as well as rookie of the year in the Ivy League, and she played for Canada in the 2003 Women's World Cup.

sweetkidsmom, I saw UCLA play and they are a great team. I don't know if Kamani Hill is the guy, but he is one fantastic player.

tsdad, thanks for the top 25 list.

I'll give him a call and get a name, post it later.

Hey- don't forget DIII. Look up the rankings. Can be great competition and maybe more of a chance to play!

I'm going to UCSB and I've gone to almost every soccer game so far. UCSB has a great team, and was ranked #5 last year in terms of attendance nationally (we average about 2100 people in attendence per game this year). The Gaucho Locos (the crazy fans) are always out in full force and always make it difficult for the away teams :) Lots of people from the school as well as a good helping of people from the SB community.

Here's an attendence ranking which I gives a somewhat decent indication of how popular soccer is:

<a href="http://www.ncaa.org/stats/m_soccer/1/attendance/2004_d1_m_soccer_attendance.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://www.ncaa.org/stats/m_soccer/1/attendance/2004_d1_m_soccer_attendance.pdf</a></p>

The #1 ranked women's University of Portland game on Friday against Arizona sold out in under 3 hours. I'm guessing mostly local community support in addition to students, we do support soccer here.

one warning about schools that are big on soccer- if they have a competitive basketball or football team, soccer will take a backseat, no matter how good the team (aka uconn)

a site with a lot of information:
<a href="http://www.nscaa.com/index.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.nscaa.com/index.html</a></p>

also, the stats page of each college team often lists attendance stats
Messiah College (d3) has amazing men's & women's teams

don't forget DIII. I go to a DIII school where soccer is the most popular sport to watch, with a huge turnout and tons of support. Just because we don't give athletic scholarships doesn't mean its not well loved and well played :)

William and Mary fields some good soccer teams as well

not listed... but lehigh

EconMAjor08, those are great attendance figures at Macalester

Expanding on 3 of the posts above.... If you find 1. a DIII school..... with 2. a good soccer team.... and the school 3. does NOT have a football team... then, soccer is the biggest thing on campus!

UCLA's a great place to play soccer or watch soccer, and although the crowds are nice, they're probably not as big as they could be. this is true for most non-revenue sports here at UCLA, regardless of how good they are, because football and basketball are just much bigger draws.

ACC soccer is not quite as hot as basketball, but it is getting there....

My H was watching the ACC championship game last weekend and it was amazing. Duke and UNC played to a 0-0 tie, played two overtime periods, it went to penalty kicks, and the game was determined by a sudden death penalty kick!!!

Ten minutes later, my S called up Dad to see if he had watched the game. Of course S had watched it - and they compared notes ....... :)

Hartwick in Oneonta, NY has an excellent Division I men's soccer team. It's also a very solid school.
