Best Computer Science School with Merit Aid

CASE -It was one of DS’s best merit offers. Two years ago Case was sending postcards with “free application fee” code to students with high stats - watch for it. I think it was common app, so an easy addition to The List.

Rice may fit - very strong computer science, and offers merit aid in addition to need-based aid. It is very hard to be accepted, but if your son has the stats he may want to consider it.

My D was accepted at UWaterloo. We loved it after visiting. She even got a merit scholarship ($2000 Cnd if I remember correctly). It was probably 2nd or 3rd on her list when she applied. However, the acceptance and offer from Waterloo came in early June when she’d already been accepted at choice 1 in the US and sent her deposit (and with need-based aid it was much cheaper for us). I don’t know if it is normal for Waterloo to let you know that late or not, but it’s something you might want to check if you are applying.

“RPI and Case Western both give lots of Merit Aid”

I guess it’s relative. RPI was one of the most expensive schools my S applied to, now it must be pushing $60K/yr for tuition and R&B. So getting a 15 to 25K merit award still leaves a very expensve bill.

If you’re looking for large merit you need to carefully select and apply to 12 to 15 schools. The merit will vary greatly even for top stat student. It’s a probability game, if you think your stats would give you a 5% shot at top merit, if you apply to 15 you have a decent chance at least one will come through.
