Best Computer Science Universities in USA?

I am interested in applying for computer science. I am not sure which universities I should apply to. I want to go to a uni which has excellent education standards, good job prospects esp for comp sci and should be a public uni plus the uni should be in the top 50 universities in the world. However I am confused which ones I should apply to, my current choices are:
University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign
University of Washington Seattle
University of California Berkeley
University of Wisconsin Madison
I wanted to apply to UT Austin, Georgia tech, Maryland but I don't see any thing special in their CS department plus their alumni's are not so good apparently in comparison to the ones i listed above. Can u guide me over this matter? and suggest me some other good public universities?

What makes UMD special is its proximity to government contractors that do a crap ton of CS and IT work and it is covenient for them to recruit locally. That said, they also recruit nationally.

Why does it need to be a public and not a private?

Private would be expensive, public unis are relatively cheap

Only if you’re a resident of that state.

Well I know that UIUC is very good for CS and has good internship and job opportunities if you do well in the curriculum. I go here and have a few friends in CS and one did an internship with Amazon this last summer and another got an internship with Facebook, both very competitive companies to get an internship with.

However, this school is expensive. If you are in state, you will pay a little over 30k while you are in a dorm and if you are out of state it is more like 40k-50k.

You may want to think long and hard about whether going to college in the US makes economic sense. I understand from other posts, you are international. Even going to state schools, you are talking at least $40K per year everything included. There is no financial aid for internationals and you will need to show financial resources for all 4 years before you get a visa to study in the US. You will find it much cheaper studying in the UK and coming to the US for grad school. Alternatively, Canadian universities like McGill are cheaper for internationals than US public universities.

Minnesota, Virginia Tech, NCSU, Stony Brook, and Cal Poly SLO if you want a relatively cheap list price. (Berkeley is as expensive as an expensive private school if you are not a California resident.)

As others have said, check other countries if you are an international student.

Go for Stony Brook. It can go neck to neck with any Ivy-league for a fraction of the price. Don’t judge a school by it’s ranking, look at it’s program quality and strengths. For instance, the president of Stanford University is a Stony Brook C.S Ph.D.

[Stony Brook University - Department of Computer Science](http://www.cs.sunysb.edu)

Highlights:
Nearly 1,000 undergradutes, 80 Professors(more being hired, since they are constructing a new $100 million CS building).

In short, you got some pretty qualified folks from UC Berekely, MIT teaching.

UW-Seattle is pretty great. Lots of connections with local and national companies and plenty of internships to go around. Great professors and research opportunities, too. If you have specific questions about it, let me know.

Guys money is nt a problem
My dad is a business man and can afford like until 40,000 $ for tuition fees other things nt considered fr now yes i m an int student. Please dont tell me about low ranked unis i might have to go bsck to my country and work so i need to enter a good uni with high ranking.

@sumzup: yeah i m very interested in uw-seattle do u study there?

The most expensive universities in the US cost $55,000 to $60,000 per year all-in, so $40,000 per year would fall short at such universities in the absence of financial aid and scholarships.

“My current choices are:

All of the above universities have good CS programs. I’m not sure how many people are going to able to agree on which US universities would be among the top 50 universities in the world especially with regard to CS. I’ve seen several lists in the past (either Chinese, French or European) but it’s not always clear whether they are ranking Engineering or just the general prestige of the entire university. The rankings also sometimes confuse undergrad versus graduate programs. If you wind up working back in your home country it may not help you if Illinois Urbana has a great CS program but no one has heard of the university. So perhaps the specialness of the CS program isn’t as important as the overall brand name recognition of the university.

UT Austin is well known in the US for having a great engineering program. Ga Tech is highly ranked in both engineering and CS. I’m not sure that your assesment of the specialness of the CS departments or quality of alumni compared to the listed ones is accurate. I’d throw the University of Virginia and Virginia Tech onto your list of universities to consider. All of the above should fit into your max tuition/fees budget of $40k.

Guys i Can afford till $60,000 gosh y r u americans so cheap! Just answer my questions why are u concerned with whether i can pay the tuition fees or not.

Then why were you saying you only wanted to go to public colleges since they’d be cheaper?

On the same note, why can’t you internationals spell?

60k is a considerable budget - with that amount you can attend any public or private university in the USA. You should be aware that most Americans cannot afford to pay $60k per year for each and every child in their families. Is it cheap if you can’t afford to buy a Maserati or Bugati?

The list of universities that you provided all have quality programs. Which, if any, are known in your home country? Since you can afford to pay for private universities you might consider Carnegie Mellon as an option.

For the 1,001th time…

It is C-O-M-P-U-T-E-R S-C-I-E-N-C-E

Top school talk does not matter. Your boss at your first job out of college will be from the University of No-Name…but he/she was probably a hell of a Unix developer back in the day.

Though there is some truth in this, its painfully obvious that your motive for constantly saying this is to make yourself feel better about attending a relatively crappy university.

if you want to work for Apple, Google, Facebook, you will maximize your odds of getting an internship at these companies from a top school. Also, many people are interested in research and graduate study.
