Do any current or future students have suggestions regarding courses or professors?
thanks!

That really depends on what you’re interested in, but I strongly recommend Chem 335 with Bagdassarian for anyone coming in with AP chem credit.

Anybody have recommendations for History or Government classes?

everyone ALWAYS likes whatever 1 credit kinesiology course that they choose to take (yoga, canoeing, kayaking, adventure games, rock climbing, etc). However, you will probably not be able to get into those until your senior year.

I was an IR major… I liked almost all the classes I took. Try and get Lane for a history… he specializes in Latin America. He’s entertaining, and really knows his stuff. I had him for HIST 300, Caribbean History.

Really though… go through the catalog and take what you think is interesting. You might very well hate a class that someone else really liked.

Definitely take Geo classes with Lockwood, she is really amazing! Arwari is a great Spanish and Cultural Studies professor too, but I believe she may be leaving to assist in running a cultural museum in DC after next year. Other than that, I have found Rate My Professor to be fairly accurate (be sure to read the comments for your specific class listing).

As far as professors go, it’s always a matter of personal preference. Some people love the same professors that others can’t stand. RMP does a pretty good job of identifying professors that are most liked by students, and the reviewers at W&M do a pretty good job separating the difficulty of the course from their opinion of the quality of the professor. A few of my favorites have been:

Clay Clemens for Government. 203 Comparative Politics with him is difficult but enjoyable. If you’re from NJ, though, you’d better get used to his jokes.

Josh Burk for Psychology

John Chesley for Classic Civ

Bill Geary and James Irving for Accounting, Vladimir Atanasov for Finance.

Lots of my other favorites are gone or leaving. Gerlach for Econ. I think Honeycutt (Philosophy) might be leaving too. I thought Chesley was leaving, but Banner shows him teaching courses next fall, so I guess he’s sticking around. Too bad Nichol’s gone… I got lucky enough to take his Supreme Court & the Constitution freshman seminar, which was amazing.

I heard IR and Government majors at William and Mary are somewhat tougher than most of the other majors there. Can anyone comment on that? (I plan to major in Gov but am considering IR and/or double major in Chem/Gov/IR)

they recently redid the IR major and increased the requirements… from a quick look, it’s

36 required credits
12 econ prereq credits
3 history prereq credits
9 language credits (4-5 years HS, plus 3 college semesters)

I would not say that it is “tougher”… it does have a lot of required classes though

You can see the requirements here: http://www.wm.edu/offices/registrar/documents/catalog/0809UGcatalog.pdf
