Best dorm at UMass Amherst?

@MsBees‌ @Violet1996‌ hi guys, I’m a computer science major and I plan to study lots during the week and chill on weekends. Get a little of both and also get a good amount of sleep. Based on what I’ve read, orchard hill seems to be the best place to do this but from what I’ve heard, orchard hill is a long walk from the campus. Could you tell me how far the science and math buildings, the gym and the Library are from there?

@tokyodrifter2895‌ (i) science/math buildings = 10 minute walk (barring the CS building, that building is literally the northern most building on campus) (ii) gym = 15-20 (iii) library = 15 minute

Note: I am also a bit of a slow walker. If I’m walking faster, then I can get to the library in a little under 10 min etc.
Note 2: Granted, O-Hill isn’t really close to much, but the walk really isn’t that bad. Maybe in winter when there’s ice it isn’t that great, but it’s fine most of the year.

I just got admitted to Umass. If I accept and pay the enrollment fee, will I get my housing preference (Southwest) or is it too late for me to get my first preference? Isn’t it first come first serve?

@Violet1996 thanks for the help man. Could you also tell me when I have to pick our housing preferences

You pick housing preferences during NSO.

Also, housing is NOT first come, first serve freshman year. If you sign up for a RAP in a particular dorm, you’re guaranteed housing there, but everyone else is put into housing by random. I think (don’t quote me on this) what happens is that every freshman is assigned a lottery number and based on your number, they’ll put you into a res-area based on your preferences. Typically, people who request Northeast, O-Hill or Central get what they want. Honors College and Southwest are more tricky as the demand is greater than the supply. Some people who request those areas get placed into their last picks sometimes.

Hey, guys I am from Melbourne, Australia and will be attending UMass in the fall semester this year.

I was just wondering if anyone had any advice on which housing to choose?

I’m currently in my second year in Australia, studying sport management. At UMass I will also be studying sport management courses so I’m assuming I will want to be in close proximity to Isenberg school of Management?

I love sport especially NFL and really want to embrace the college life while I am over there.

I’m leaning towards South-West due to location and the atmosphere there (I like to party as well as get my work done). I was also thinking central could be good?

Also would I be better suited to first year housing since it’s my first year at college even though I’m in second year in Australia?

Thanks in advance for any help!

If you want to embrace the college life, then I’d say go with Southwest. Also, since you’re doing Sports management, most of your classes will be in Isenberg which is nicely located close to Southwest. Central is where a lot of the engineering students reside and is much more quiet than Southwest.
