Just curious... as a freshman, which dorms would be the best to live in? Any that we should definitely stay away from?

You don't really get a choice about your first-year housing. No matter where you end up, there will be something positive to say about the building, whether it's the size of the rooms, the location, or the close-knit community. There will also be not-so-good things to say about it, but I can't think of any dorms that are all-around unpleasant.

I think it was on campusdirt or somewhere that I read the Tower dorms are the best and that the new dorms are huge and beautiful, but away from everything social and all the events. It also said that Munger's dorms are small but they fit two people per room anyway. =/ But like ringer05 said, first-year housing is assigned.

I've heard the New Dorms were big and ugly, but that the rooms are enormous. I also heard the Hazard Quad, Tower Court, and Stone-Davis are good bets, but to avoid Munger and Dower.
But, of course, we can't pick until next year.

Aw, poor Munger and Dower. People always treat them meanly.

Dower is tiny. I lived there first year, and there were only 28 residents. All of the rooms are triples (one big room) or quads (two bedrooms with a common room between), and it's almost entirely first-years. It's far away, but not much farther than the New Dorms, and it's cute. You'll know everyone, the hallways are huge, and the living room is inviting.

Munger was, hands down, my favorite place to live. I was there a year and a half before I went abroad and moved to the Tower Court complex for my senior year. The building was bright and cheerful, the custodians were wonderful women who kept the place amazingly clean, there are three living rooms, as of last spring it had a DVD player/Playstation, all of the non-basement rooms have hardwood floors, and it's the most centrally located dorm on campus. Sure, the first-year doubles are small. Very small. But the community is great.

Stone-Davis is beautiful, but the rooms are also very very small. It was completely renovated about six or seven years ago, and it looks like a hotel inside.

As a first year, I think any dorm with lots of other first years gives you the best experience.

And on the Munger/Dower note:
I'm in Munger this year, and while the rooms are reallyreallysmall (and it doesn't have a dining hall, boo!) it really does have an awesome sense of community, everyone is really nice, and we have lots of cool events. :)

Dower, I think, is actually an awesome place for first years to live, because it's almost entirely composed of first years... and the rooms are BIG!

So, yeah, all the buildings have their pros/cons.
