Best dorms?

I got accepted to UConn’s Computer Science program. I want a dorm where there aren’t many parties. I saw that there are several buildings dedicated to dorming. Which would be possible for me to dorm in? Which one won’t have as many parties?

Also, how is the dorm life? I’m really scared that I might not like my room mate and also scared about making new friends there. Is it inviting?

As a freshman you have no say in what dorm you get, unless you participate in one of the Living and Learning Communities. A new dorm is being built right now. All the other dorms are pretty old. All dorms that freshmen get in have communal bathrooms. If you have a problem with your roommate you have several opportunities through the year to switch…once in the fall, again after Winter Break and again in the spring I believe. If you are worried about getting along with those in your dorm you might want to consider a Learning Community, as you start of with 1 common interest. The reality is you need to get involved…that is how you make friends. You will also make friends in class. My daughter is a freshman and has not been to 1 party! She joined the Disney Club as soon as she got there and even went to the Student Union alone at times on a Fri or Sat night to see a free or $2 movie, or participate in there free activities at Late Night….I believe they have activities every weekend. People are friendly…almost everyone is in the same boat as you…in the very beginning 3 people from English would just go right from class with my daughter to a soccer game. Orientation is also helpful in meeting people. You spend over 24 hours with people generally in your same program/major. That is how my daughter found her roommate and another girl that is still a good friend.

What is the learning community? @TLD1267

@Peoples With being a Computer Sci major you should definitely consider signing up for either Idea House or Ecohouse. They are Living and Learning Communities. What that means is that you will be on a dorm floor with others that are interested in similar things, and will probably have classes with you as well, so you will have a nice start of new friends to meet. Idea House is for innovation-minded folks (and tends to attract others majoring in Engineering and Computer Science), or you could sign up for Ecohouse which attracts those very environmentally aware and tends to have many Engineering students, Science majors, etc. Just go on to the housing site and look for Living Learning Communities. There is a Global House for those wanting more of a globally diverse floor and an Arts one for those very interested in the Arts, etc.

Also there is one called WIMSE that will be in a brand new dorm that is for Women in Science and Engineering. and one called Engineering House that may be more for guys (but not sure)

@Peoples …the first link I posted in my previous post lc.uconn.edu tells about Learning Communities.

Here are a few things that you should keep in mind for living on campus:

All of UConn’s freshmen are going through the same thing you are at the beginning of the year.
You don’t have to be friends with your roommate.
If you have any preferences regarding sleep schedule, cleanliness, noise level, etc, discuss those at the beginning of the year.

How do you sign up for a living and learning community? I would be interested in either WIMSE or Ecohouse. Also, do the Living and Learning Communities have communal bathrooms?

@oxjinx …the following is a link with all info for Living and Learning Community…

also the dorm is being built now…not sure how the rooms/bathrooms are set up….I did copy this from Uconn’s website

This new 212,000-square-foot facility will house students participating in one of eight Living & Learning Communities – EcoHouse, Engineering House, Eurotech House, Innovation House, STEM Honors, Public Health House, ScHOLA2RS House, and WiMSE (Women in Math, Science & Engineering) House – who are developing skills in innovation and creativity to lead their generation. Construction began in November 2014, with a budget of $105 million and completion targeted for Fall 2016.

Where do you apply to be part of these communities?

When you fill out part 1 of your housing and learning community application they ask you if you’re interested in being part of them.

I’m in honors program for engineering. Any idea what my options will be for housing at UConn? Someone mentioned new honors dorms being built but I don’t know if that would affect me Freshman year or not… Are all honors dorms living and learning communities?

See the link above in comment #8. Honors is different than a learning community…either way you could be eligible to live in the new dorms.
