I realize this is a "business major" forum but I happen to believe that the best majors for a career in business are not necessarily "business majors" in the classic sense.

Here are my top combos:

Statistics & Economics
Mathematics & Finance
Accounting & MIS

What do you guys think?

Here’s what I like and have hired for management consulting gigs:

Econ/languages
Econ/engineering (impressive)
Physics/any humanity
Math/any humanity
Econ/any humanity
Econ/ philosophy
Philosophy/anything quantative
English /anything quant

I’ve never favored undergrad business degrees.

^Well that’s nice for you. Luckily for us business majors most other people hiring for BUSINESS jobs do prefer them.

Accounting/MIS

Very curious about some things:

Why is someone who is hiring for a consulting forum (a position of respect) wasting time coming to the business major forums just to tell people he doesn’t like ug biz degrees?

Also, 2college, I never knew that management consultants had time to make 22 posts a day on a website forum. You guys must not be to busy in your firm, I’d suggest hiring more business majors…maybe clients will appreciate it.

I wonder what is going to happen if we combine accounting and engineering ? Did anyone hear of that?

big4bound I don’t know you,
but that was rude.

I like your top combo of Statistics & Econ!

Not if you’re looking into IBanking, which some may consider the “cream of the crop” for BUSINESS jobs straight out of undergrad.

I would pick these:
“Econ/engineering (impressive)”
“Physics/any humanity”

By the way, 22 posts per day…(impressive) lol :)

I’m happily retired and a mom focused on helping my kids and ones I volunteer with get into good colleges, thank you.

Most people hiring for business jobs prefer business majors? Really? Who told you that? This came up at my recent Harvard B School reunion. I can tell you anecdotally that it is not the case among my HBS classmates who direct hiring for a boatload of elite jobs.

Though admittedly few work for the big4 or went to schools where accounting was a major, so you may well be correct there.

P.S. If MCs are anything, we’re prolific :)

2college, you’ve got to understand that you’re talking about a completely different set of people here. Most of the people that come on this forum are not ivy league level, where the rules are completely different. We are mostly the public college type on here.

I’ve noticed a mix here in my brief time on CC, but I do get not all are after elite jobs. The heckler here, however, seems to be quite familiar with management consulting and the constraints on a MC’s time, so I’m guessing it’s fair to respond honestly.

I’m considering to double major in MIS & Informatics, as the University of Washington offers both. I have seen a lot of member mentioning MIS & Accounting double major. So which one you guys think is better ? (I’m not into auditing after all)

I would say MIS & Accounting > Informatics. It’s more well rounded and after all, that’s why many ppl choose to double major.
I’m probably double majoring in MIS (although my college calls it Computer Info Systems which is slightly different) and Finance.

I heard that many wall street firms are hiring engineering graduates. Go figure…
