Best Engineering Major For Me?

I'm interesting in getting a major in engineering (at MIT or Stanford if i can get in) but I don't know what's right for me. Which of these would you recommend for me?

Computer Science/Computer Engineering - I have a strong interest in computer and am open to the idea of getting a job as a software engineer (possibly in Silicon Valley)

Aerospace Engineering - I think it would be very cool to design jets and satellites for the government

Mechanical Engineering - (See above), and there a lots of job opportunities with this degree

Electrical Engineering - I want to find out more about this major and what kind of jobs it can get

Mechanical and Electrical engineering can get in Aerospace (mainly mechanical) and Computer Engineering (I would guess electrical mainly.) I’d like to let you know that Computer Engineering is building the hardware–not software–for computers and is a combination of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Just so you know.

I think what would be best for you is to start out in Mechanical because they can go anywhere, and then decide if you want to stay or change. Take some electives to see if you would like programming (or even try it now at home.) Also, if you end up wanting to do Aerospace, I’d recommend staying in Mechanical because the Aerospace job market is very cyclical (and right now it’s at a low) and you can always go somewhere else in the field.

If you get into Stanford or MIT, you don’t have to decide until your sophomore year. During your Freshman year, you could take seminars and figure out what you really like. Before that, how can you know.

If you get into MIT they have a dual EECS program which is not computer engineering but you get to choose if want to study mostly CS or EE. All the majors you mention are great so choose the one you like the most

Many students start with one type of engineering and switch to another. In fact that includes me - switched from CivE to MechE around my 3rd semester. Personally I don’t see a lot of advantage to aerospace degree. It seems MechE with some aerospace electives would allow more flexibly after graduation.

For now don’t worry too much which specialty. Concentrate on making a list of a variety of schools (safety, match, reach). As you probably already know, Stanford and MIT are a high reach for all. If you have stats to consider applying, you probably qualify for excellent merit scholarships elsewhere. Good luck!

Thanks for your answers everybody!

Can somebody tell me what electrical engineering is mainly about?

Try looking through the two “IMPORTANT” threads at the top of this engineering section. They should have info and links to help you.
