In general what type of college/university will provide the best overall education for undergraduates? A large research U, an LAC, or somewhere in between?

Yes. (10 char.)

It will depend on the kind of experience that you want as an undergraduate. If you want to know the professor in every one of your courses, be able to interact with them outside class, build those relationships, then you’re talking about the strengths of a LAC.

If you want the opportunity to work with “superstars” in a given field, be a part of a community larger than some cities, be around world-class research, then you’re talking about the strengths of a large research U.

Go visit different types of schools and see which one fits you best.
