Best Foreign Language for College

Most in German-speaking countries can speak english . I took a semester of it, am all for learning it, but was extremely amazed by the emphasis on english placed in Germany- in Germany and Austria, everyone I encountered spoke semi-functional English- and these were the rank and file types.

Thanks for the link DanielJ.

hmm, my two cents, french and german would probably be the easiest languages to learn for someone speaking English. English being a german language, and french being where it derived the language above common speech. For business French is probably next to english the most widely spoken language, perhpas next to spanish also, but i dont know. Im hoping to go to school in montreal, so im gonna learn it if it kills me. I managed to learn german, and i thought it was really easy, and incredibly useful in business. I took latin for 6 years, and though it almost bored the crap out of me, I feel it was worth it. Russian isnt as useful as people are saying. Honestly chinese would be chosen for most use for business. Its also pretty easy despite what people have said.

chinese and spanish

I plan on continuing with spanish in college, possibly a double major but more likely a minor. I figured, if I pushed myself through 5 yrs of Spanish, why not continue? I figure plenty of other people must figure the way I do

i've taken 7 years of spanish and yet none of us can speak spanish fluently

all we do is translate stuff. this isn't what spanish is about.

i have done the work that he wanted.

ummmmm okay lets translate this mofo

he hecho el trabajo que (hmmmm i should use subjunctive here) queria.

i like most people have o translate it in our minds before saying something. that's not what language is about. its about speaking it fluently. school spanish is more analytical don't you think?

I can translate somethings without thinking about it, do you know what I mean? Where you don't think the english, but you actually think he hecho el trabajo...? Or am I just a nut case?

i forget where i read this/heard this but:

You know you are fluent when you dream in that language.

Pretty weird to think about..I am going to ask my Spanish teacher tomorrow if he dreams in English or Spanish haha...fascinating....

my 8th grade spanish teacher said she could dream in both...she also said she dreamed in black and white and in color

i don know, i sleep talk in german,but i wouldnt consider myself fluent, maybe conversationaly so.

celebrian i know what you mean.

the phrases that i'm more well aware of and familiar with i can say easily.

pero necesito trabajo porque yo tengo un examen manana.

i didn't translate that from english to spanish. i just had a mental picture of it (much like with english when you say house you have a mental link to a house. same with casa)

I hope to study abroad, so I can become fluent. Hopefully in Madrid. I've always wanted to study in Spain, it's so beautiful.

the only spanish ive learned is from working with mexicans, which means i can curse fluently. From my expierience with latin and just working in a lot of kitchens, im alright with comprehension and general flow of the language

a ha ha ha ah aha ha aha ha ha ha ha ha

spanish also varies a lot depending on which Spanish you're studying... Spain spanish and spanish spoken is some south american countries is quite different.

necesito trabajar... 2nd verb shouldn't be conjugated... the 'yo' is also redundant, because the speaker is defined by the conjugation of tener.

/just sayin'
//<--not fluent either
///I never use subjunctive...

the reason i will be taking italian is because i will be an art student, and if there's one thing italy is good for, its food and art. can't wait to study abroad there.

soccer guy yeah i konw about the trabajar that was just a simple error, i know that it can't be conjugated. but people do put yos or tus or ellas before the conjugations all the itme

honestly, italian is one the silliest languages to take, its only spoken in italy, and the population is declining, so its a dieing language. for your reasons, its not bad, but there is plenty of other art than italian

I agree about Italian, I mean for your purposes its fine, but it's really not very widespread. I think it'll disappear in a few hundred years. If you're not Italian, or living there, chances are you don't know Italian

Okay I am going to get a Ph.D. in Economics to hopefully teach. I am okay in Latin now, but I need to figure out what to take in college. Any ideas?
