best fraternities/ societies

Was it W&L or Kappa Sig's national that made the decision?

Looks like we know who a lot of new betas will be... Could be an event similar to SPE getting kicked off and moving Phi Psi.

From what I've heard, nationals made the decision and W&L approved/seconded it, but that's from at least a third hand source so don't quote me on it. And Sottilde, I didn't think of that option. We could just end up with Kappa Sig reforming as the new Beta - it would probably be weird with everyone having to memorize new history/traditions/secrets, etc but at least they'd be able to stick with the same guys.

Why was SPE kicked off? And when?

SPE was kicked off before anyone who is a current W&L student got there - they were disbanded by their nationals, from what I've heard it wasn't for anything major. They recolonized winter '06 and are now once again an active fraternity at W&L.

I would hardly call the current "Sig Ep" chapter a frat...

And why is that?

Question
My son is a freshman a unique guy and I do not mean that lightly. He is a big powerful young man that can bench press 400 pounds and is an athlete, but loves poetry,is very iconoclastic, well read in Zen,and Taoist teachings. Brought up by two people with Strong Southern roots(SCV) who are also teachers in traditional Japanese disciplines.
He loves philosophy and contact sports the more contact the more he likes he loved wrestling. He is not political hates both party's equally, does not think much of drunks,or druggies
I can not see a fit in a fraternity for him,he would rather drink Java and talk cosmology than party. I was in a "football player heavy fraternity in College that made Animal House look like a debutante ball. Maybe I am out of touch is there a frat for him.
Whats your advice

I wish I could reach through my computer and slap some people in the face right now.

It's so crazy to look at the contrast between the W&L section and all of the other liberal arts schools on CC. I have, far and away, seen the most ludicrously shallow and overall unnecessary comments made in this section (thankfully balanced out by some more down-to-earth posters), whereas the other schools' sections tend to portray a much more healthy and relaxed social life which is not in opposition to academic life. I would crap my pants if I ever saw something like this on the W&L forum: <a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=398035%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=398035</a>
Now granted, Carleton is an exceptionally quirky and creative school, but it definitely wouldn't hurt W&L to move a little more in that direction.

Wouldn't it just be great if the W&L environment were such that threads like this never came up? It's kind of a downward spiral, because W&L definitely wants to get away from the aforementioned things, but they keep coming up on the internet and influence prospective students' decisions not only about where to attend school, but then once they get to W&L, where to rush!

Thankfully though I don't think this forum has that great of an effect on what actually goes on at W&L. But whenever I read something like this, it just makes me sad that such middle-school popularity issues are legitimate topics of conversation for freaking COLLEGE.

Also curious to know JD's and Cadaver's definitions of a "frat." I'd be surprised if it is at all in line with what fraternities where originally meant to be. It's frankly disgusting how far away many modern fraternities have come from their founding virtues (and by that token, how far away many of the current generation of W&L students have come from W&L's founding virtues).

Uh.. and by "where," I meant "were." I can't believe I typed that.

LOL! Hey Morgan nice typo you moron. How dare you speek on behalf of W&L University with such pour grammatical skills.

Listen if you want to be cool at W&L there are two things you have to do:

 1. Join a big three fraternity. This is just obvious and no one is going to like you if you dont get into one. People will say they like you but really they’re just saying that, and thinking the opposite.

Hang out with your friends dads. Dads are the key to success at W&L and if you can get on a late-night-text basis with your friends dads then people will really think you are cool.
