Best Fraternities

The elephant walk is complete bs, based on my house and the houses i have friends in. Loonlake you really think fiji is going to do an elephant dance or any kind of hazing during a rush event?!

^ Uh no, I never said that. I have a friend who’s pledging Kappa Sig and he’s heard rumors that it’s gonna happen but I never said I thought it would. And it was Welch1016 who said he believed that FIJI does it.

Good luck with that!

MomofWildChild, thank you for making my day

Seems like a lot of parents on CC report that their kids “don’t like the taste of beer” or are “allergic” to alcohol. Uh, yeah…

Most kids don’t like the taste of ANY alcohol, and that doesn’t seem to stop them!

Quote from LoonLake: “I heard a statistic that 23% of IU students under the age 21 drink.”

LoonLake,

Where do you get the 23%? Based upon other replies, I thought that only 23% of IU underage students would not drink. Even that is the case, it is actually not bad.

I do not mind people drinking all day long as long as they do not puke around all over, do not get drunk and drive, and do not assault others. I am pretty sure that most students can fit in.

But driving is my favorite drinking game!

My friend’s EDUC-X158 prof said so. It sounded low to me too.

My husband is allergic to glutens and cannot drink beer. My son is allergic to barley and hops and also cannot drink beer. Stalker allert.

alert Funny how after you spell allergy a couple of time, it turns alert into allert :)

Is alcohol a part of fraternity rush in any way? I would assume that OFFICIALLY it’s not allowed. But, in reality, could it play a part in rush?

I went to a few rush events for a frat and they had beer while we watched monday night football and they invited me to a beer pong tournament, which I didn’t go to.

Alcohol isn’t a “part” of anything for a frat; they’re not gonna disrespect you for not drinking it unless you’re rushing one of the hardcore frats like Acacia.
No doubt, there is is hazing that occurs that includes drinking mass amounts of it, but frats that push it that hard are far and few.

And toffa13, I always thought you were a girl… >_<

^ I thought he was a girl too.

Something that I’ve noticed about college (not just IU) is that a lot of people who come in fervidly opposed to alcohol are the ones who turn into huge binge drinkers. It’s not meant to be a generalization, just something that happens to some people.

Well, if my son becomes a big drinker, he’s going to be very sick his whole time there  If he eats a piece of bread with barley in it, he’s glued to a john for days  My daughter is also allergic to barley and hops. She visited one frat at IU, took one drink of beer and threw up. It wasn’t the “visual” she wanted to create for herself. LOL. I’m more concerned about him managing his VIDEO GAME time, than I am his drinking. A totally DIFFERENT landmine :)

Hahah. I definitely have some guy friends who could literally waste hours sitting in their dorms playing video games. Luckily, a lot of people do have their heads straight at IU and know how to balance studying and free time well. People DO study. I’ve gone to the library many times attempting to find a place to sit down and do work, but pretty much every last chair and study table is taken. :(

leila, I’m sure that is very true. Being from Indiana, and being an IU grad myself, I know a lot of really smart and talented IU kids and alumni. And I am all for balance. I HOPE he has some fun in college…attends some parties, plays sports…all that stuff. But my son is one of those kids who actually listens to parental advice, and even if he doesn’t follow it to the “T”, he does consider it. My daughter, on the other hand…Aye Carumba! You tell her right, she veers left…well, at least she used to. Now she lives at home, has a 4.0…almost OVERLY serious  I thought that I would give my son some advice on living conditions of different dorms, housing communities, reputations of different frats…because I know that he will consider my opinions in a healthy way. If anything, horror stories about things like frat hazing is enough to keep him out of a crazy fraternity. That, and the fact that he has a goal of going to an elite grad school…so he knows he needs to make good grades. He’s ALWAYS had a good head on his shoulders. He’s a little insane about “extreme sport-y” kinds of things…but excessive partying…not so much. I REALLY appreciate all of your great advice.

Sigma Phi Epsilon is (currently) a dry frat with mostly business majors. all nice guys, no hazing. they dont even have a pledgeship. however they may begin to allow drinking in the house soon, so check that out.

If you’re looking to pledge for Acacia, Kappa Sig, Sigma Nu, or Phi Psi, then you’ll have a lot to deal with in keeping studying and pledging well balanced. If you’re looking for a relaxed fraternity that doesn’t have excessive partying or a rough pledge-ship, then consider lambda ki, although their location is a bit out of place.
