Fraternities

Hello everyone.

I’m going to be in Bloomington next year and will most likely rush since I am OOS and looking to have a good social life. I also plan to be involved in extracurricular clubs and intramural sports. With that being said, I take my grades extremely seriously (will be in Kelley) and don’t plan to go out more than once or twice a week. Additionally, the whole concept of hazing is relatively intimidating and I was hoping someone here could spread some truth about which fraternities actually haze and which do not? I understand that there will be some concept of hazing among most frats, however, I’m looking to steer clear of the serious ones. In your opinions, which frats would best suit someone looking to succeed academically and have a good amount of fun on the weekend? I promise I’m not a prude or anything, just looking for accurate information because there are so many prejudices regarding Greek Life at IU! Right now, I’m looking strongly at FIJI, SAE, and Sigma Phi Epsilon…

Thanks in advance!

Not familiar with SAE but Fiji and Sig Ep both fit your preferences. Another option is business frats which do have fun as well. The main two at IU are Ak Psi and DSP.

Congratulations! My D will be a freshman in Kelley in the fall also. I will tell you the same thing that I told her, don’t go into recruitment with any preconceived notions. You are not even on campus yet and you already have a short list of chapters. Instead, you will be much better off meeting people around campus, through Kelley, etc first semester. Then, after you have gotten to know some people that are in fraternities, and you attend rush parties at several houses, you will know which is the best fit. Also, as Grayson1234 said above, the Business frats are a great option. My older daughter is a member of DSP at Syracuse. She loves it! They have great leadership development programs, networking and many co-ed social events. Don’t overlook that option. You can do DSP and a social which is what she has enjoyed.

@MomfromPA15317 Thank you for the advice! The only predicament is FIJI rushes before the school year even begins…
