I'm looking to live in one of the freshman dorm buildings in the fall (not the suites), so I was wondering which ones are preferrable? I heard Birnkrant is nicer. any thoughts?

Birnkrant is really nice, but it’s being reserved for Trustee/Honors students only (I went today and this is what I was told by the housing people in Birnkrant. They wouldn’t even let anyone who wasn’t Trustee/Honors tour the dorm.)

I toured today too. but I didn’t get to see the dorms. well that’s sad! what would be considered the next best?

Fluor and Parkside are really nice, but they are suites of 8 people in four rooms with a shared common area, not two-person dorms like the stereotypical dorm room. This isn’t a bad thing though.

There really aren’t any “nice” dorms after those. Only varying degrees of bad ranging from “eh” to “blegh”.

This is back on the topic of Birnkrant. I keep hearing that it’s an honors dorm. Here are some worthwhile questions:

Does anyone know why Birnkrant became an honors dorm?

Who exactly is allowed to live there? I’ve heard a variety of answers, including:
-Trustee/Presidential students ONLY
-Trustee/Presidential/Dean students
-TO students+aforementioned merit scholarship students
-any merit scholarship students and their choice of roommates

Is this a long-term change, or just a temporary thing?

@victoriaheidi usc housing is first come first serve. the dean kids found out about their acceptance before everyone else, so they get priority with housing. i’m assuming they all just chose birnkrant, but i could be wrong.

We asked Sat. at the housing tent at USC and we were told that Birnkrant was for Trustee/Pres. only. Both (or all three in a triple) must be T/P scholars as well.

^^Yeah, I’m Dean’s and I found out in January, but that’s not enough for Birnkrant.

^^ say if your a scholar and dont want to be in that dorm? Are your forced?

I wish they’d been clear about it. I’ve been hoping all this while that I’d be getting a Birnkrant triple, but if Dean’s scholars can’t stay there, I’m not sure where exactly I want to stay. My next choice after a Birnkrant triple and double is Pardee.

The Living at USC: Freshman 2011-2012 book says the following on page 8, “Birnkrant is home to the University Residential College, a vibrant and enhanced living and learning experience for Trustee and Presidential Scholars, as well as other select freshman awarded honors upon adimission to USC.”

My guess is that they are waiting to see how many want to live there. They will take Trustee and Presidential first, but if space is avaialble, they will admit other honor students.
