I’m currently selecting my preferences for my freshman dorm next year, and so far I have it narrowed down to Broward Hall, Sledd Hall, and Lakeside.
I’d consider myself a pretty social guy and I have a few friends going to UF next year as well. However, I also like to have my own space, preferably my own room.
If I were to choose Broward Hall, it would have to be a double room. I know that this hall is central and very social, but I’d have to compromise and share a room. Most of my friends plan to stay in Broward.
If I were to choose Sledd Hall, it would be a Three Room Quad. From what I’ve heard, this hall is less social and older, sometimes resulting in issues with the building. Is this true? I also like the idea three room quads, which give me the opporutunity of having my own room. Also how exactly does a Three Room Quad work? Is Sledd open to freshman as well?
Lastly, my final option would be a private bedroom apartment in the Lakeside Complex. While I would be getting the privacy I would like, I understand that the complex is VERY far from the center of campus, therefore it is anti-social and inconvienient. So should I rule this one out completely?
What would you guys suggest to be the best option? Thanks!
Also please correct me if any of my assumptions about any of the halls are wrong.
I suggest Broward. You will enjoy the central location, proximity to your friends, and the activities and social aspect of that area. It’s right next to the dining hall. They also have the Broward teaching center right there for free tutoring. Lakeside is quite a distance, I think you won’t like the commute by bus or bike. Sledd is quieter and a higher proportion of upperclassmen.
Sharing a double isn’t that bad. Freshman year is just one of those experiences where people live on top of each other and get used to it like a summer camp.
You will have new friends and people to room off campus with for sophomore year and THEN you can enjoy having your own room.
BTW I noticed on the survey above that Rawlings Hall is THE WORST. lol. My son lives there, and likes it fine. There is a bus stop right outside his dorm, along with a subway (where he can get a free nightly sub that goes with his meal plan). Most classes are a 5-10 minute walk. So take that survey with a huge carton of salt.
Dorm advice. Hoping to get into honors. My son is semi social but takes his studies very seriously. He is from a small highscool. I am hoping he branches out a LITTLE in college but as a pre med track he needs to stay focused. Which dorm would best suit him?
@uga1990 Trust me, no matter where he goes it will be quiet and he’ll be able to study. Like every other freshman here is pre med or engineering so he’ll find people to study with. Hume is nice but it is slightly more antisocial than most dorms.
The best dorms at UF are at Hume for sure. But with that being Honors it’s possible that it will be less social of an environment. They do have lots of Honors activities for them so that helps. Murphree has great character but is very old and mixed with upper classmen so I wonder how Freshmen would do there-and a bit further from the better dining halls I am told. Broward is def center of the campus but traditional style and needs updating…it seems like basically having to choose between average living choices at best. Is there really a “best choice”???
