I applied Regular Decision so I have no heard back yet, but I was wondering what the best housing options are for freshmen? I would prefer to live in one of the bigger residence halls. I looked on the website and I think Potomac House and Thurston Hall are my top 2. But I read that for Thurston if you apply RD that you will most likely be put in a quad or five-six person room, and I've heard that people don't recommend those. Are there any current students that have an opinion on housing at the Foggy Bottom campus? Thank you!

I am not a current student at gwu but I know a ton of people who go to gwu and they all say Potomac is the best for freshman who want to live on foggy bottom but its hard to get sometimes as it fills up a lot with kids who applied to gwu ED as they get housing priority.

Hey there,

I am an ED1 student and I can easily say that my first option is Potomac Hall. Unfortunately, usually spots in Potomac are quickly filled up. You should note that housing prices are actually based on the building you live in, and the number of people within that unit. Most people live in Thurston in a quad, or a five-six person room, because it is the cheapest option.

Madison an Lafayette Hall are other nice Freshman options.

I would check this out: https://living.gwu.edu/sites/living.gwu.edu/files/downloads/Rate%20Chart%202013-2014.pdf

Thank you! I felt like Potomac would be popular because it seems like the best option, but if the ED people don’t fill it up that would be cool! That makes sense that the larger rooms are more common because of the price. I will definitely check out Madison and Lafayette too! Thanks so much to both of you!

If you really want to live in Potomac you should find a roommate who got in ED to GWU. This will up your chances of living in Potomac!

That’s really smart!

Thurston is nice just because of all the people around you. However, it’s pretty far from where a lot of classes are held (relative to other dorms) and Potomac is the same way. On the bright side, there are some pretty good food options around there (that take GWorld!): Carvings, Subway, Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts and a 7/11.

Madison has fairly spacious rooms and they’re all doubles with a bathroom attached. But it’s right across the street from the new Science and Engineering building which GW is currently building so if you lived in Madison prepare for lots of construction noise.

Lafayette is incredibly nice since it was recently remodeled however the rooms are kind of small compared to the other freshmen dorms on Foggy.

I know you want to live on Foggy but living on the Vern isn’t so bad (most of the time). If you do end up on the Vern, I definitely recommend trying to get into West. The rooms are super nice and most of them are singles with a fair amount of common space. Plus the kitchens are super nice!

You don’t need to worry about Madison being across from the science and engendering building as I am pretty sure it’s meant to be done by next school year if all goes to plan.

I’m currently in a six in Thurston and I was really concerned at first, but it’s not so bad! It’s so cheap compared to the other dorms/rooms and I’ve become really good friends with my roommates. Having so many roommates means I’m never bored, because one of them always knows of a party or something. But you shouldn’t live in Thurston unless you’re willing to be open-minded about how people spend their free time (if you know what I mean), and tbh, if you’re not interested in partying, you probably shouldn’t live there. But you might surprise yourself, I never thought I’d be a big partier in college and it worked out for me.

I’ve been in Potomac and it’s very nice, but as an RD student your chances of getting in are extremely small. I don’t know anyone who lives in Madison but I have a good friend in Lafayette. It’s renovated and in a great location but it’s much smaller and quieter and he says it’s difficult to make friends in the dorm (whereas I’m close friends with all my neighbors in Thurston). I also have good friends on the Vern. Everyone I know in West loves it - their rooms are as nice as Potomac’s, but it’s very quiet. Somers (also on the Vern) is more social than West but not quite as nice. I don’t know anyone in the four little dorms.

I got in ED and I’m trying to decide between Potomac and Thurston. I know I’d have a ton of fun in Thurston but I’m worried about having up to six roommates, haha. Is it worth it to take that risk or to instead take a double at Potomac and attend the occasional Thurston party?

samesies, I hear thurston is a lot of “fun” but in the end if it will seriously affect my grades…idk. I’d prefer somewhere in the middle of everything, with a lot of students, but also no slime oozing off the walls. Like Potomac should be cleaner but on the other hand thurston should be really live. Its a tough decision.

Yeah I agree. I’m not like a hardcore partier but I do want to be able to go out! I also would rather have my dorm be crowded because there are always other places to study like the library or starbucks or something. If I end up on the Vern I’ll definitely try for West! I really just want to have people live near me that will want to go out and do things and not always be bored!

Kmfloyd you seem like the perfect person for thurston since you wouldn’t care if you lived in a six since people would be around you all the time and that’s what you want.

Thank you! From all these comments I feel like Thurston would definitely be my best match!
