In terms of:: niceness, newness, cleanest

bump…

Well it depends what you are looking for. You can find some threads on it, but ill briefly mention each option.

Thurston- Big, party dorm (even tho its not as bad as people say, it is where people go for dorm parties) rooms are old and smaller compared to other dorms.

Potomac-New (2006 i believe) but smaller rooms (Basically all of the older dorms were actually apartments at one point, so their size reflects that, whereas Potomac was built to be a college dorm). 2nd in size to Thurston.

Madison- Smaller dorm (about 200), larger rooms. Great location (I live here and highly recommend it) Parties are not that common but do happen.

Crawford- Very similar to madison.

West Hall- By far the nicest freshman (if not school wide) dorm. All quads with individual bedrooms and a common area. The catch: It’s on the Vern, which means annoying commute to foggy bottom (But you can take classes on the vern too). Most kids like me prefer to stay on foggy because we love the city, however if you are hesitant about living on foggy, go with West hall.

Rest of Vern Dorms- Older dorms, larger than foggy bottom dorms, but not anything like West.

Some last notes:
-House themes do not matter whatsoever
-Every GW dorm is better than a traditional college dorm, so you really can’t go wrong anywhere
-You meet people no matter you live and can always travel to thurston for partys.
-Don’t overlook location, especially if you are not a winter person (Madison and Crawford have academic buildings next door)
-I believe Lafayette and 2034 G may be available, they were both renovated this year so I don’t know anything about them, but I imagine they will be decent.

Madison looks really good to me, but I recall reading somewhere that it is where a lot of athletes live. As someone with completely zero interest in sports/athletics, this draws a bit of concern from me - would you say that the larger percentage of athletes (if there is one) has any impact on dorm life?

Athletes do live in madison, however there is no real impact. If anything, it means that nights are always quiet because most of them have to sleep for practice in the morning.

you can also consider MV

Does anyone know anything about Lafayette or 2034 G Street? The GW website says that they are “offline for 2010-2011.” Will they house freshmen for the 2011-2012 school year?

I really like Lafayette, similar to Crawford and Madison, I guess.
You really can’t go wrong with any dorm, the campus is really 4 blocks around, like a circle, and the blocks are short, so you are pretty much central to anything, anywhere.

agreed with multitasker. they’re all great but do have slightly different vibes. if you’re looking for the nicest dorms in terms of interior and quality and ignoring the vibe then west hall on the mount vernon campus is the newest but potomac is also newer and has big and nice rooms.

Dont pass over MV. The dorm rooms are spacious and it’s a great way to get acclomated to college life. My daughter lived in Merriwether and loved it. She loved Eckles Library and didn’t mind the shuttle bus (I almost referred to it as the ferry!). Most freshmen end up in Thurston which I think makes it harder to study, etc. You will take a few classes at MV so it’s worth a look.

Think about living in a place where you can meet people but also study and do well.

Our first year daughter lived in Thurston and Mitchell (roommate issues).

The down side (or up side) to Thurston, depending on your perspective, is that the rooms are larger so though it is shared space, you can move around. On the other hand, there are rooms of 4, 5 even 6 in Thurston and the more roommates, the more complicated it can get. It is definitely the party dorm and is noisy.

Mitchell Hall is right next to Thurston and has some floors of first year students. The rooms are singles which puts off some folks but typically residents come to love having their own space and there is good camraderie up and down the hall ways.

Many of the athletes do live in Madison. It is tough to get in to. Same with Potomoc. Tough to get in to because demand outstrips availability, not because of the athletes.

The rooms on the Foggy Bottom campus are smaller because it is a city and space is at a premium. GWU continues to see increasing enrollment numbers and due to agreements with the district, are limited in expanding their footprint in the Foggy Bottom area. The Mount Vernon campus is just minutes by shuttle and offers cleaner, newer space. Dont be afraid to go there. You still have full access to the city life of DC and Georgetown.
