Best Japanese schools?

I was just wondering what some of the schools with well known Japanese (or Asian studies w/ japanese emphasis) are. If possbile, a language house would be great to have, but that doesn't necessarily equal a great program. What have you guys heard?

Todai. Oh wait a minute that's not the question. I have no clue. Sorry.

/now I'm guilty of speaking in otaku shudders

probably most university of californias, univeristy of hawaii... and princeton

are there are LACs that rate up there?

For LACs, I would recommend Oberlin and Smith (if you're female).

lol, nope. i can't check that square...

Todai isn't really an otaku word...

and besides, what about waseda? that is, assuming your talking about
東京の大学。

Middlebury

middlebury and oberlin are wonderful... it really depends on what all you are looking for;
some people have suggested for languages: scripps, u of rochester(?), grinnell(?)... a friend also wants to major in japanese and she mentioned amherst and swarthmore?
good luck!!

that's good to hear about swatty (I applied there). Okay, so now that we've got the basics covered, could you guys take a look at the schools I applied to and offer what you might have heard about the departments?

Carleton, Cornell U., Dartmouth, Emory, Macalester, Pomona, Princeton (a big reach), Swarthmore, and the University of Washington (not WUSTL).

Can't go wrong with any of the West Coast/Pacific Rim universities.

Lawrence University. A former ambassador to the US from Japan actually went there. Lawrence is a little gem, tucked away in the midwest - Top 50 or so in US News.

anybody else? what about my list?

I believe Earlham college has a very noteworthy Japanese program.

The University of Michigan has one of the oldest Japanese Studies programs in the country... check it out:
http://www.umich.edu/~iinet/cjs/about/index.html

Lotus 123:

D is planning to study Japanese Language in college, she has visited Carleton and Scripps/Pomona, both have excellent programs, Pomona's program is larger than Carleton (Pomona's Japanese program is open at all attendees at any Claremont College).

As stated by others, Earlham and Lawrence has programs, Earlham is a larger and coordinated for the Midwest colleges the overseas Japanese Programs.

St Olaf (in same town as Carleton), Illinois Wesleyan, Beloit and Kenyon all have decent programs.

You mean 東京大学? (toukyou-daigaku?)

Nobody adds the possesive "no" to the name.

Anyway, my list (by no means exhaustive) includes:

Harvard
Princeton
Stanford
Columbia
Berkeley
UCLA
UC Davis
Michigan
and Hawaii

I can't speak for the LACs.

Sorry 'bout that. You're right, it's 東京大学. I'm just used to using の for my school (I attend a community college and get high school credit, and we say SFCCの大学)

Not a big deal. I just thought it was kinda funny.
