Best Journalism School to become a Sports Journalist?

Hey,
I'm a first year at Ohio State looking to transfer. My dream is to become a sports journalist or work in sports broadcasting, but I'm beginning to realize OSU is subpar when it comes to their journalism program and internship opportunities close by. I've always wanted to live and work in NYC. I'm trying to find a school that would offer me a great education in regards to journalism, a vast amount of internship opportunities close by, and if the school offered a concentration in sports journalism (or something similar to this) it would be a huge plus.

Any advice along the lines of how I should go about becoming a successful sports writer is more than welcome!

I'm currently looking at Syracuse, NYU, Columbia, and UCLA.

Oh yea, and my stats are looking like this------ 4.0 GPA, in both the Honors program and Multimedia Marketing and Communications Scholars program, involved with numerous clubs, working towards the DLTP award, leader in diversity oriented club, Office Assistant for campus housing, and I am a staff writer for an upstart campus magazine. I also have an internship for an online travel writing company this summer since I'm studying abroad in South Korea this summer as well. My HS scores were a 1790 SAT, 28 ACT, top 9% of class, 4.16 GPA and valedictorian status

I know thats a ton of information, but any help or advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Syracuse is a great choice. I’d also look at UNC. Both schools have great journalism programs and highly followed athletic programs. I know people at both schools who are on the fast track for employment at places like ESPN and SI, and they wouldn’t change a thing.

Nice stats, BTW.

Yea ive looked at UNC as well. To be honest the only reason i’m not giving them as fair a shot is because of their location, which i should probably reconsider. But I would LOVE to go to school, live in, and work in NYC. Also going to school in NYC would offer me great opportunities for internships year round. But wow…I would love to be on the fast track for employment at ESPN and SI…and thanks for the compliment

If by Columbia you mean Columbia Univ., I was under the impression they do not offer a bachelor’s degree in journalism; isn’t it just a graduate program?

Yea you’re right Columbia only offers a creative writing bachelor’s degree, but I’m still considering it

My son wants to study sports journalism as well. He is planning to attend Indiana University in the fall. He was rejected by Northwestern, did not like U of Missouri, did not want to be in NYC. Decided that IU has all the sports that he loves as well as a journalism program. he was a direct admit to the journalism program, and will plan to minor in business. They also have a sports management/sports communication program at the school as well. They added a graduate program for Sports Journalism. check it out…sportsjournalism.org. Hope that helps!

Thanks for the info…Ive actually looked into this briefly. But I feel like I’d be in the same boat, if not worse when it comes to internship opportunities. Also, I need to get out of the midwest…but thanks for the great advice
