there's not a lot of sunlight, academically, between any of them, especially when you control for things like match, reach and safety of admission. I mean, Econ and Bio are the "bread and butter" of any good LAC. CMC probably has the most concentrated econ environment, but, you'd probably wind up taking bio courses elsewhere on the extended Claremont campus.

Wesleyan and Bates both have highly ranked Econ departments (as measured by journal citations) but, one school is in rural Maine and the other is in a small city in Connecticut.

Wesleyan and Haverford each have faculty doing research using human stem cells, if that's any measure of a good Bio department. But, good teaching can often compensate for lack of cutting-edge research opportunities, and, who's to say there aren't excellent teachers at Amherst, Williams and Swarthmore? You're probably better off narrowing your search to which schools fit you vibe-wise.

Kevinfan,
Swarthmore has both excellent Bio and econ departments, but as johnwesley has implied, this group of schools would range from safer schools for some students to high reach schools for the same students. If you are choosing five colleges, we would need to know more about your likes/dislikes as to location as well as your academic stats.

As an aside to johnwesley, I am taking my twin 11th graders to Wesleyan's Open House on 10/13 and really looking forward to it!

I have some requirements for my LACs
1.offer double major(Economics and biology)
2.offer financial aid to international student.(My family contribution is 30000)
3.California\Pennsylvania\Massachusetts\New York are my favourite places
4.good at biology and Economics
5.good STUDY ABROAD opportunity
6.no Greek life
7.good CAREER CENTRE
8.workload isn't so hard
9.high rate to graduate school
10.location/near the big city

Do the colleges in my list fit my requirements?
Please tell me.Thank you

Middlebury is to hot for international student. But how is Bowdoin?
It's really hard for me to find a college.
How can I find a MATCH college?I mean, how can I know a LAC will fit my style?

Workload isn't so hard + high rate to grad school go in opposite directions. And I'd say they're all pretty challenging.

If #10 is really an important criterion I would suggest Wheaton, Pomona, Wesleyan, Vassar, Bard (almost), Haverford (not Swat for workload, though it's not going to be much if any better at H.), Trinity.

I know Wheaton isn't on your list, but it is a bit easier to get into than some, maybe the workload is a bit easier, and very near Boston and Providence.

Although based on the list of priorities you presented I think Haverford/Swarthmore/Trinity/Vassar/Wesleyan fit best. Ultimately, you'll have to decide what fits best. You certainly have plenty of very good places to research.

Bowdoin definitely for bio and ecology. The university owns an island and is the only one in the country to have its own field station.

ooh...oopss...i just went back and it says econ. my bad...but still i would say bowdoin
econ is one of the most popular majors there. the econ department is storng

Some personal ideas.....because I'm a Chinese...so my information might be wrong...Really thanks for helping...
1.I really love Pomona's location...And would you please tell me more information about Pomona?
2.I heard Macalester had a large amout aid to international student. But the professor quality isn't that good.Is that ture?
3.Amherst is too hard for me to get in.And I heard that Amherst rarely admit student in mainland China.
4.I'm not afraid of workload .....Just don't like MIT....I heard student in MIT can sleep only 4 hours/day.
5.Holy Cross is good .But no FA to international student.
6.Wheaton means Wheaton MA?
7.How about Reed?I heard it's good at bio.
8.How about Bates?
Thanks

1.offer double major(Economics and biology)

6.no Greek life
7.good CAREER CENTRE

I add two....
11.not so attach importance to SAT and TOEFL scores.
(I heard Colgate get student that CR+MATH>1500 in mainland China last few years,I can't get that high.So I cancel Colgate)

12.love student with research background...
(I published a paper about biology with a professor in a famous journal in China....So I hope to choose a LAC that will love my research background...)

I think #1.#2.#4.#7.#10.#11 are the most important...

And I also want to know...Besides my 12 requirements, what else I should consider when I choosing my LACs?

two more maybe I should consider
13.good reputation at US...that means...famous...well-known for a lot of Amercans...
14.a place I can play tennis....table-tennis....badminton....(that means has a good sport...but this point isn't important....)

I put # means the important points I consider...

10.location/near the big city

11.not so attach importance to SAT and TOEFL scores.

1. Double major is exceedingly difficult in eight semesters (two theses)

2. Financial aid for international students is given, but few seats are available, so competition is high

Oregon
4. Reed is good at biology (highest future PhD rate in the country) and economics

Study abroad is available

No Greek life
7. There is a good career center, but I don't know how it rates compared with other LACs

Workload is very hard

High rate to graduate schools, especially to PhD programs
10. In Portland, OR, an excellent city
11. SAT is important. The average TOEFL score for international students entering Reed is approximately 650 paper-based and 280 computer-based

Re students with research background: More of an individual issue, but could be helpful

Reed is not well known by a lot of Americans, but is well known among academics

Reed is one of the lesser sports-active schools, but has tennis courts!
