Best LAC's for Economics

I'm applying to a few national universities, but for my undergraduate experience, I'd rather go to an LAC. That said, I want to make sure that my economics degree at the LAC will open up all the doors of a degree at a national university.

Could someone please give me the names of the top-flight Liberal Arts Colleges for economics?

It really doesn’t matter. The best LACs for job placement, however, are:

1) Amherst, Williams, Dartmouth (LACish)
2) Middlebury, Bowdoin, Pomona, Wellesley
3) Colgate, Wesleyan, others.

Schools like Swarthmore and Haverford tend to do better in graduate placement than job placement.

Thank you for the quick response. I heard that Claremont McKenna is also a top economics school; it’s one of my favorites, so I was wondering if that was true.

I notice you’ve posted about good programs in Politics as well. Have you considered the PPE major (Politics, Philosophy, and Economics)? Pomona has an excellent one, including a semester at Oxford http://www.pomona.edu/academics/departments/socialsciences/PPE.shtml.

Claremont McKenna as well as several others have PPE programs as well.

Holy Cross and Davidson.

Claremont McKenna is a great school for Economics, and also for job placement. DH was an Econ. major there eons ago (though he went straight into grad school instead of a job) and it has just been getting better since he graduated. I would highly recommend it.

What does one typically do with an econ degree?

If you go to a top LAC or Ivy you go into elite business. IF you are an academic type and want to work for the govt or a think tank you go to grad school or work in washington.

Thanks SarahsDad, I’ll definitely look into that.

Claremont McKenna is great for econ.

At least in the past, Wesleyan was not only very strong in economics but a pioneer in innovative instructional techniques (interactive economic models, etc.) Of course in 2007 I imagine most good economics programs use the same kinds of tools.
