If I get an apple, will i miss anything program wise for school? Im thinking business apps and science crap for premed and med. I already know ill miss out in games, so I might make an el cheapo gaing rig. Any ideas?

sorry "gaming" rig

you wont really miss any apps besides games.

Macs have no apps, and they are ridiculously expensive.

BUILD AWAY!

umm...care to back up your statement that they have no apps?

They are not expensive for what you get (and the ibooks are damn cheap). You get the best made laptops (on par with IBM but different) and extraordinary support. You also get OS-X which blows away windows (and is still prettier and easier than linux).

They also have LOTS of apps. The highly specialized apps tend to be just as available for mac as they are for windows (and linux too...which means osX and X11 and you might be able to run it as well). In fact there are a lot of apps out there for max and linux that I WISH I could run on windows while I have never felt lacking in the other direction.

can't you run a windows emulator on macs which will allow you to use most pc programs

yes you can

I want one that can convert into a tablet. :( Any opinions?

I'm not sure there are any ak-47's that can be converted into a tablet.

I have seen an mp3 player made out of an ak-47 clip. Maybe that is what you are looking for?

wow this guys on crack

Aroundthecorner: Nice to see that a few students are thinking about Tablet PCs for school. The links above should give students a good idea about what Tablets are and what they can do (and not do). Convertible models with a centrally hinged screen and a keyboard is probably the most common type of Tablets. Slates which have a separate keyboard attached via a USB port are very light weight and have long battery life (6 or more hours) are very useful for mobile professionals (doctors/salespeople, etc.). You can carry a slate like a clipboard and take notes without having to carry around a keyboard, mouse and optical drive

If you are asking if Macs will have a Tablet PC, the answer so far is no.

Toshiba gets good press and has a whole family of Tablets: M205 is its second generation model which got great review. CompUSA sells them for $1300 if they have them in stock. The R10/15 Tablets are just hitting the stores and start around $1500 and the new M4 Tecra model is powerful and pricey at $2000+.

A lot of CCers like IBM ThinkPads. IBM is in the process of releasing the X41 Thinkpad Tablet PC. Prices start around $2000. Tabletpcbuzz.coms home page has a link to the X41.

Ottothecow: When hes not high on crack, hes actually pretty tech-savvy I dont think you can take an AK-47 and convert it into a Tablet PC. Maybe with a little duct tape ?

An MP3 player in the shape of an AK-47 ammo clip ? Well, nobody on a bus will ask you what youre listening to. And nobody is likely to sit next to your, either!

and sorry to burst your bubble...but lenova has been assembling them for years...now they are just going to put their name on them instead of IBM
[/quote]

There is a difference. When the IBM name is on it, IBM makes sure ist up to their standards. You take that off, and the hardware will go to the dogs, along with post-sales service.

Are you all certain that you're getting laptops? What if your college doesn't have a huge wireless network? Would it be dumb to have a desktop (perhaps with a flat screen to save space?). Thanks.

Pictures of the IBM tablet are available today (found from FCC submissions) on slashdot.

IBM will have its name on the products for many years to come. They love the brand recongition that comes with the thinkpad and lenova loves the fact that they can sell as an established brand

how reliable is www.ibuypower.com... any service?

If anybody wants to see the Thinkpad Tablet here it is https://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/prod/oet/forms/blobs/retrieve.cgi?attachment_id=533104&native_or_pdf=pdf . I'm actually consdering one right now, the prices aren't bad and it seems reallly good.

laptops. first decide u want a dektop replacement or a portable one. actually u can make a desktop replacement portable too if u can carry it and u r willing to buy an extra battery.
i got a dell9100 for 1.1k. its
3ghz
512 mb ram
128mb ati 9700
dvd/cdrw
wifi card/modem/lan
4 usb ports
15.4 inch screen

its works really good. it can run doom 3 and half life 2 on not the max but high settings. but thts prolly the case of updatng my graphics card and ram which i will in the following year cuz dell laptops are highly upgradeble. only thing tht happened was tht a fan blew off and i think tht over heated the motherboard and my laptip stopped working. i sent it to dell services and got my laptop back in 3 days. now thts quick.
besides u can always buy external hdd for a laptop for storage purposes. it willbe much cheaper then buying a 100 gb laptop hdd. and pentium 4s are cheaper then pentium Ms and will atleast go for 4 to 5 years.
and insted of buying from stores look online. ull find some gr8 deals on ebay. and abt warranty and service most laptops in ebay have tht. i know i bought mine from ebay.

has anyone had experience with the Dell 700m. I am looking at buying their new model and I would like some feedback. Thanks.

Notebooks are very efficient and useful...you can take them wherever you want on campus to do an essay/study...you can take it with you when you go home for holidays....they're a tad bit pricier than desktops, but there're just so many advantages...especially when you go home at the semester's end...you dont' have to pack in your box, monitor, mouse, keyboard, etc.

michuncle, you are AWESOME.

I'm going to do some research and PM you for opinions. ;) Still weighing pros/cons, my ability to use one, compatibility, etc.
