Hey everyone! I am going to buy a laptop soon and need some advice. I am a current PC user and honestly have been fed up with all the problems that keep coming up. I think I bought a new computer three times in the last 5 years.

I really wanted to purchase a MacBook for college but I have read a ton of mixed reviews on whether that is a smart decision since I am an electrical engineering major.

I know many people say the price for a MacBook isn't worth it but the alternate laptop that I was going to get is the Samsung Series 7 and that costs about the same.

Some advice is really much appreciated because I am so confused!

MacBook Air 13 if you’re okay with spending the extra cash. Otherwise, MacBook Pro 13 or the ASUS Zenbook. It’s really irrelevant what operating system you use as an engineer, and to an extent the UNIX roots of Mac OS might even make it a better choice.

Can’t go wrong with a Toshiba Satellite or a Lenovo Thinkpad. My Satellite has been running for like 9 years (that’s almost half my life…) and for some odd reason it still runs as fast as my friend’s 2011 Macbook Pro (given the right Internet connection).

Buy whatever laptop you want for personal use. Like grapesoda said, the OS doesn’t matter that much for the engineering curriculum here and a good amount of CS majors have Macs to do programming on due to its UNIX foundation. I see a lot of EEs doing their circuit work in the computer labs anyway. This year the computer labs got upgraded to Core i5’s and 24" LED IPS monitors, so doing your work there isn’t a bad choice. I was also fed up with PCs 5 years ago and decided to get a MacBook. It’s still going strong after going through 5 operating systems (Leopard, Snow Leopard, Lion, Win XP, Win 7). The only problem that I had with it was that the LCD had to be replaced because a small gray blotch showed up. I only use Windows for SolidWorks and MATLAB (I’m a MechE).
