@MaineLonghorn is not about someone picking the movie for me. At the USC application, I only have space to put the name of the movie not to explain why I choose it
Personally, I’d consider my favorite director, then would choose from that group. If you naturally like any movie that appears to have either originated or apotheosized a style, that might make an interesting choice.
What is the point of the question of listing your favorite movie if there isn’t a chance to explain the why? There is a lot of potential with the question. Story line/character that connected to you in a special way. Actor/actress/director you admire. Music that touched you. Important life event tied to the first time you saw the movie. But all of that is lost if you just list a fav movie with no background.
Better pick a movie directed or produced by a USC film school alum. How about, “Attack of the Clones”?
Sounds like a dumb question, but USC Admissions probably has some psychologist who says it will reveal all kinds of important things about you. It’s futile to try to guess what they’re looking for, so just pick whatever movie you think is best.
It’s probably true that you shouldn’t overthink it, but it sounds like you’re going to. I know I would.
If that’s the case, I’d try to pick a movie that’s a little less well known than some of the movies you listed. But only if you genuinely like the movie.
This is matter of fact section and over-thinking it is not a good idea. These are quick take questions that have very little to do with getting into USC, they are more about getting a glimpse into your personality. Put your favorite movie - don’t answer it with what you think they want to hear - that is the only wrong answer you could choose. A classic, a comedy, sci-fi, romantic comedy - anything goes here.
No don’t overthink it. Yes, it’s kind of a trick question. The only mistake is to pick something really, really dumb. Or something that seems obviously calculated to impress. Any of yours are fine. Any of us could probably tell you what each represents in you.
@simba9 Ever see Dark Star? John Carpenter and Dan O’Bannon, when they were USC film students.
I concur that you should not overthink it. Both of my daughters answered each of the short answers called for instinctively and within seconds… going with whatever simply came to them in that moment. And they are both at USC now. And neither chose an answer with any obvious USC connection. Good luck…
My D has filled out her USC app and will submit soon. Her favorite movie has elements that tie into her academic passions, which she noted in her response.
