Best National Merit Money School

Hi. I live in CA and am a semi-finalist for NMS. So far I am only applying to UC's but I have received some great offers from other schools giving me a full ride, namely U of Florida and U of Oklahoma. I wanted to know, what's the best deal you guys have found from a college that's garanteed with NMS and selection of the college as their first choice. Also, do you know how to contact NMS to inform them of your first choice college changes? Thanks alot... I'm surprised there is not another thread about this.

I believe there was a postcard in the packet to send in with your first choice schools. My son waited until the last day and just called them, so you might try that. Here is the contact information:

You might want to look at this thread for information on colleges. <a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=5656&highlight=national+merit+schools%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=5656&highlight=national+merit+schools</a></p>

I personally liked Arizona State best of all the full ride NMS schools that sent me stuff.

If you're in CA, definitely consider USC. They offer a $15 or 16000 (can't remember which) scholarship.

Boston U is also very generous with $ for NMF.

You do not have to contact the NM program about your first choice school until next spring. The deadline is April 19, 2006. So you can choose your school and change your 1st choice to it as late as that date.

You might want to check out this earlier thread <a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=81213%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=81213</a>, specifically the posts about the University of FL. At one time it was one of my son's top 6 choices, but he backed off (but not because of money). It appears that the NM full ride at UF will still leave you $5-$7000/year short. I've heard (and believe read here) similar things about the University of Oklahoma.

We visited a couple of other schools in the summer that give full rides. The University of Tulsa was one. The other was Baylor. (You can go to Baylor's website, enter some test scores, and see exactly what you could get.) However, he didn't care for either school.

When I was applying, I believe Ohio State automatically offered full tuition to NMF... and, although it wasn't officially in the package, that most years they ended up having enough extra money to give the NMF who attended a stipend on top of that.

(This was a few years ago, so might want to check on that.)

^Ohio State offers full tuition plus $4500 for national merit. The best i've gotten so far is from U of Alabama: full tuition, full room and board, $1000 extra a year, $2500 for research or independent study, and a free laptop...

thanks for sharing that about alabama. don't recall them being mentioned before.

thanks again buckeyenation. i checked the website.

tuition for 4 years

on campus housing @ regular rate for 4 years

a NM or Achievement Scholarship of at least $1,000.

$2,000 for summer research or study abroad

if register for orientation, receive a free laptop computer when you enroll.

there are probably schools other than Alabama that have similar full-rides for finalists...............full-ride to include tuition, housing, stipend for study abroad/research, laptop. would readers please list the schools that have the full-ride packages, not just the full-tuition ones? this would be a good thread to do that on...........to list the full-ride schools (tuition, housing, stipend). some schools only offer the full-tuition and do not include housing, etc.

yourmom182 - thanks for starting this thread. always a good question.

University of Oklahoma scholarship is a full ride plus a monthly stipend and it's also for 5 years, assuming you maintain 3.25 GPA. I know several kids who had 40+ credit hours from AP and took only around 12-16 hours and got a Master's too in the 5 years. Good deal but you might want to check out the different departments; some departments are good but others are pretty lame.

Does anyone have any updates for this thread?

i think the university of central florida also offers full ride plus monthly stipend

trck: thanks for info

Note to all: When posting a NMF $$$ school, please mention whether such an award is available to OOS, too..... or just "in-state" students.

University of Texas at Austin offers $4000 first year, $3000 each of the next three, totaling $13,000 (dont know if thats in or out of state, i talked to them a long time ago - im in state though).

New York University only offers $1000 total =(

Haha that's just my two cents...

sucks when the schools you wanna go to hardly offer anything for NM!

Rice University, definetely..

baylor(80,000), i think rice only gives like 2,000 a year
