Do bear in mind that some of those colleges have some specialty studies that are unique. Five Towns is quite the example with its unusual music program and College of New Rochelle turns out a lot of nurses.

Old SAT scores dont help. Wake Forest used a scientific study to PROVE that SAT scores have little or no relation to success in college. The SAT is so outdated and unhelpful its laughable. Its used by people who are fixated on rankings in a feigned attempt at objective qualifying. Its really an insidious instrument of measurement.

Ignore it.

Nearly every college I know needs it. It really severely limits you to ignore the SAT or other testing. Also many merit awards use it that number. If you want to get into a number of colleges that do look at the SAT, you had better not ignore it.

You misread my posting cpt. In the context of THIS thread and what a previous poster put up, using the SAT for rankings as the exclusive measure (at least in that post he/she made) I said to "ignore it." In other words as a measurement of the quality of a college education, to ignore it.

As for a measurement of success in college, I said to ignore it.

Yes, you MUST take it and you MUST submit it to 99% of colleges. But Wake Forest, Holy Cross and Bates which have DUMPED IT for college admissions, are on to something. And its not guesswork they are onto. Its scientific proof its a poor measure of success.

Sadly, we DO have to use it to get into colleges and sadly, they do use it for merit scholarships. Its very unjust. Some schools (mostly private schools) teach to the SAT. But that is a far cry from learning how to think and be creative and have some DEPTH to your knowledge. Regurgitating facts isnt learning in my humble opinion. But I digress.

Why does Union College never show up in these data downloads? I have to imagine its 75%ile SAT is among the top 14 schools in NYS.

Regurgitating facts isn't what the SATs are seeking to measure and something like creativity is certainly subjective and less easy to quantify or assess.

They're onto something all right. A way of simultaneously lowering their acceptance rate by attracting more applicants and increasing their SAT average by not including their lowest scorers in the averages any more.

In fact, I will go even further with this. In Wake Forest's decision to get rid of the SAT in admissions, they cited their scientific study which ALSO said the SAT is NOT a fair measurement of intelligence. Its NOT an IQ test. Not by far. Some of the brightest people in colleges are HIGHLY creative and the SAT exam actually punishes creative people. FACT.

Yes, it is what it is and its what schools require (except the few that have been "enlightened" by the truth), so kids have to take it and submit it. But its NOT a fair measure of anything but a particular student's ability to take that kind of examination on that one saturday morning. In short, its very one dimensional.

^They haven't gotten rid of it. Over 50% of enrolled students still submit it and the school still reports median SAT scores.

SATs are highly correlated with graduation rates. SATs are a good indicator of a student's liklihood to succeed. Why would anybody NOT use them.

Here are some good ones that collegehelp (inexplicably) left out:

Hamilton 1280 1460
Bard 1320 1430
Union 1150 1340
St. Lawrence University 1120 1280
Hobart and William Smith Colleges 1120 1300

Like nocousin, I'm not a fan of ranking colleges by SAT scores. I'm not convinced they're quite as useless as nocousin suggests, but they don't really tell you anything about the academic quality of the institution, and small differences in SAT scores don't tell you anything meaningful about differences in the student body--especially because, as gellino points out, SAT-optional institutions are going to have (artificially) higher reported 25th and 75th percentile SAT scores because only the highest-scoring applicants will choose to submit them.

bclintonk-
Are the schools in post #18 SAT-optional? They did not come up in the IPEDS data from US department of education. If they are SAT optional, then it is hard to know what their SAT range means.

SATs are correlated with just about everything that is academically desirable about a school. They are the best single index of academic quality by far.

Hamilton is SAT-optional; don't know about the others.
