I should mentioned that Cornell has several colleges that are affiliated with SUNY and which are the most selective of the public or public-supported units in New York:
Agriculture
Human Ecology
Industrial and Labor Relations
Veterinary Medicine (post baccalaureate)

New York residents get a tuition break.

Where is Stony Brook?

Long Island.

Is it safe to assume that these SATs are CR + Math only?

Stony Brook is now called "Stony Brook University" and I missed it because of the name change.

SUNY at Stony Brook 1080 1280 1180

Yes, CR +math only

Geneseo is underrated, relative to Bing.
Supposedly, it's unique among the SUNYs for offering an Ivy League honors experience.

Do you have the SAT ranges for the Macaulay Honors Program?
Thanks!

admissions rate: number admitted divided by number of applications

lower admit rate means more selective

Reputedly, Purchase is indeed very artsy. It certainly has an excellent art museum! :)

Would it be weird for an out of state person to go to one of the CUNY's? College Board says they are all like at least 95% in state.

SUNY Binghamton is now called Binghamton University as well...

Cornell has NY state contract colleges. They are NOT SUNY. I know because--

-I am a SUNY professor and my union offers a scholarship for children attending a SUNY school. It does not pay for Cornell.
-We have three kids in college. The tuition at Cornell (with a daughter at ILR) is almost the same as the other "elite" private school colleges my other children attend.. Cornell's is about $10,000 less, but they offered less financial aid, i.e. a wash.
-Cornell is an ivy league school. It is very hard to gain admittance.

Freshman percent retention after one year:

Comparing grad rates and retention rates, 30% of freshman at Stony Brook drop out after the first year. That's a lot.

Maybe I'm slow... but I see 11% for Stony Brook?

89%-59%=30%
Stony Brook students dropping out after their first year

This is a very sweeping generatlization. If does not mean that 30% students necessarily drop out after freshman year. It simply means that 30% of the students do not graduate **from Stony Brook /b.

If a student does not finish within 6 years and they are no longer counted in Stony Brook's 6 year co-hort rate. It is not unusual for students to change from full time to part time status and graduate after 6 years and it does not count students who transfer to other schools after freshman year.

sybbie-
Eleven percent drop out after freshman year at Stony Brook. An ADDITIONAL 30% drop from sophomore year on. That 30% is much larger than other schools. Total drop-out rate is 41%.

Whether a student leaves because they flunk out or because they transfer elsewhere doesn't matter. If you leave, you leave. It doesn't reflect well on Stony Brook.

Where are your numbers coming from? The data sheet from the SUNY website for incoming 2007 freshmen shows SAT ranges which are a little higher. Yours might be USNWR which shows 2006 freshmen?

Muffy-
My data comes from the IPEDS website (US Dept of Educ) as reported by the colleges. It might be from 2006, can't recall. Shouldn't be much different from one year to the next.
