If we're looking at state schools and science, SUNY-Albany has one of the country's top-rated programs in nanotechnology.

If state schools are included I would add TCNJ, Rutgers and UDel. I am sure most state schools will be $40K even for out of state students but these three come to mind. My daughter goes to UDel and we are very impressed with that school.

I definitely second the idea that often those schools with over $40k pricetags end up costing less than those priced considerably lower. Our experience was that we are paying less than a state school for a $40k school.

But I also know that there are people who will not find this true for them. Any family that supposedly can pay more than $40k (that is, their EFC says they can) may well be stuck paying the full freight ... not all kids get scholarships. I don't have a $40k+ EFC, but I imagine that even if I did, I might well want to find a good school that costs less!

Not that I found any in the northeast when we were looking ... but fortunately, we have folks here who know where to find 'em.

Cooper Union (NYC) no tuition is charged

Olin is another one.

A bit south of northeast, but James Madison University is $25k for tuition + room & board for out of state students.
