Best Northeastern Schools below $40K per year..

I'll start and throw assumption College in Worcester out there. anyone else know of any?

opps... That's below 40K per year. Obviously all the State schools should be below that. Although U vermont is close.

Oh.. I think Marist is still below 40K

Clark University and College of the Atlantic are probably two of the stronger private schools under 40K, but they're just under the wire.

I think I'd start any list with Hunter and Baruch. (Value for money, they probably can rank up there with any of the privates.) Then I'd probably add SUNY-Geneseo, SUNY-Binghampton, and SUNY-Stony Brook.

Just squeaking in under 40K is Stonehill. St. Michael's comes in at $37400.

What is the difference? Why not look at % of need is met, and merit/leadership award money? What is meant by "best"? Why must it be in the NE? For example, if you are from NYC, and went to UVM it will be a 5 hour drive. Why not look 6 hours south, or west and save some $?

Mini, mentioned Sunys, so TCNJ in NJ, and Rutgers.

Here's one- has the NY advantages- Manhattan College

Stonehill was already mentioned; Providence College also sneaks in under the bar (or they did last year).

Champlain College in Burlington VT is well below $40k.

Pine Manor in Boston, all women

olin college (it's free)

I believe Marboro College in Brattleboro, Vt. is < &40K.

Right you are NE Mom! A sub 40k price tag doesn't always mean cheaper. A more expensive school may meet more fin. need. But even with say, 10K in merit, the remaining 35K is a bear. I guess if you start in the mid 30's and get some aid that school is more within the reach.

Canisius College in Buffalo, mid $30's

see their financials and merit aid stats: <a href="http://www.canisius.edu/admissions/financialaid.asp%5B/url%5D">http://www.canisius.edu/admissions/financialaid.asp</a></p>

Small, private, smart people, Jesuit traditions.

Buffalo is a great city for students with the Albright Knox Museum, Buffalo Symphony Orchestra, many regional theaters including Shea's, Niagara Falls, and college clubbing around Chippewa St. Other big state schools nearby: Buffalo State within 1 mile; and the State University of New York at Buffalo (SUNY@B also called UB) within 7 miles. Students enjoy on weekends: Buffalo (2 minutes), Niagara Falls (20 minutes) or Toronto (2 hours) which lively/interesting like NYC in many ways.

Excellent nonstop, discount flights from NYC (JetBlue, Continental, USAir) or Boston; 450 miles/6.5 highway hours' drive to downtown NYC at Lincoln Tunnel (just so you can judge distances)

I fixed the thread title for you, Nightingale. (That below $40 per year DID attract my interest!) ;)

MA: Emerson College in Boston (just) and Gordon College in Wenham

A little north and colder, but McGill -- if you can get in -- $25,000 TTL.

Basically, the reason that son had to throw 5 acceptances in the trash. Son had 10 acceptances, but he could only pick from 5 schools, b/c we could not afford the other 5 (and I was not being asked to pay 35k, but a crazy amount just the same). Also, keep in mind if you feel your freshman might mess up, and not have a 3.0 at the end of freshman year, you have to face telling the kiddo to leave, have him/her go into further debt, or you are punished by paying an insurmountable sum! It happened to a friend of mine, and her family has been paying full freight for their D since mid sophomore year!

Are you including books, and transportation?

Susquehanna-maybe not if considering total costs-in PA
Sacred Heart- Jesuit school in CT.
Juniata College-PA

York College of PA (from their website):

Tuition and Fees $12,750.00
Room and Board 7,410.00
Total $20,160.00

They have a very wide selection of majors to choose from!

St. John Fisher and Nazareth Colleges here in Rochester - the former with a great new Pharmacy school and a nationally ranked DIII football team, the other with a great lax tradition...

I think alot of the smaller colleges are under 40K. Here in the Lehigh Valley we have 6 four year universities: Lafayette, Lehigh, Muhlenberg, Moravian, DeSales, and Cedar Crest. I think only the first two are just over 40K. More important is the average grant awarded.

I guess many CC kids and familes look at those colleges that cost over 40K, but because my kids were B, B+, students we didn't even look at them. There are many excellent colleges that offer merit aid that are less then 40K. Neither of my kids were that keen on staying in the NE either.
