Best option for medical school?

I'm a recent graduate and finished with an undergraduate gpa of 2.83. I will be taking my MCAT in April and hopefully applying to U.S. Medical school in June. My question is should I apply to do a masters degree for Fall 2014 or should i apply to do a second bachelors or a post bacc but I do not know any post bacc program that would consider a 2.83 gpa applicant. I need advice on what to do. I really want to go Medical school which way is the best route for me?

You may also want look into DO programs which might accept a lower GPA. However, 2.83 seems really low.

I think you should try to go for Master degree and do well with it first. GPA of 2.83 is sort of disaster in my opinion. Did you take MCAT yet?

Your GPA is too low to get considered for allopathic or osteopathic medical schools. (Most school screen for a minimum GPA/sGPA— at least in the 3.0- 3.3 range).

DO NOT APPLY TO MED SCHOOL THIS CYCLE. (Even if your MCAT is spectacular.)

And you’re correct that your GPA is too low for a SMP and for most post bacc programs. (Those programs require a 3.0 minimum.)

If you’ll consider applying to a osteopathic school, you should retake any courses you did poorly in (below a B) and apply using your new (hopefully) improved GPA in a few years. You don’t need to enroll in either a masters or second bachelors to do that. Simply take courses ala carte from your local college.

Your other option would be to stay at your uni and take additional coursework until you raise your GPA to 3.0 and then apply to a post-bacc program.

BTW, it’s awfully late to be applying to grad school and your GPA is too low to gain acceptance at a reputable program. If you can find a program that will consider you, it will likely be in open-enrollment type of program which may not get you where you want to go.

Based on the background of one of the top students in my medical school class, go to the master’s route. My friend had a 2.5 at UNC and was rejected from medschool. He completed a master’s in statistics, published in several medical journals (he was really the statistician) and was admitted to med school on his third attempt. He had a very high gpa in graduate school too.

^ @frugaldoctor, How long ago did your friend do this?

Molu…
do not waste your time applying this season. Your app won’t make it past the first filters because of your GPA. You’re a recent grad, you have to do repair.

It sounds like you have done the premed prereqs so a post-bacc isn’t right (I don’t think). I think you need either a SMP or retake your classes that are bringing down your GPA and apply to DO schools.

Don’t waste time or money on this next app cycle.

Curious: What classes did you get A’s in? B’s in? C’s in?
