Best path to business with a high GPA between Industrial Engineering, Econ, and MMSS?

Hi everyone,

I am a super excited to be joining the class of 2021! However, I am still unsure about what business route I will pursue, and I was wondering if someone could in these programs (or not) could help me out.

My situation:
I’m currently in McCormick for Industrial Engineering . I was accepted to the MMSS program, but I have not made a decision to accept or deny the program (they are asking for this soon.) I also know that I want to pursue the Kellogg certificate in Managerial Analytics for sure.

I know that I want to go into consulting, but I possibly want to keep my options open. As a result, I want to make my second major in addition to Industrial Engineering either MMSS or Econ. I want to know what the best path towards the Kellogg cert/consulting career is. I guess I have a few questions that would help me figure this out.

Is it too hard to do both MMSS and IE?

IE and MMSS are both very rigorous programmes by themselves. I think it would be nearly impossible to double major in both at a high level. IE is a great pathway to a career in banking or consulting. There is no need to double major. If you really like Econ than go ahead and double major or minor in it, but only do it if you really want to (for the sake of learning it), don’t do it just because you think it will boost your employment prospects.

You’ll need a second major for MMSS anyway.

Look at the requirements for both IE and MMSS and decide that way. IE has some science requirements that MMSS doesn’t have.

I believe you’d hit pretty much all the prereq’s for the Kellogg certificates through MMSS.

^ I was going to mention looking into the Kellogg certificates as a combination with IE if you don’t want to go the whole double major route.

lots of MMSS kids are in IE @ “I think it would be nearly impossible to double major in both at a high level”

if you can, you can. if you can’t, you can always drop out of MMSS.

^ The point that I was trying to make is that at NU (my wife is an alum so we know a bit about the school) the kids try to get involved in lots of clubs, frats, and other social aspects of college life. Given that OP is already in IE and probably wants to go into consulting, if the extra work involved in MMSS going to give him any career or academic benefits particularly if he has to sacrifice some aspects of college life. As you said, if can do it, fine, but if he will struggle to do it, then maybe he shouldn’t.

@londondad I’m struggling in MMSS right now, and I love it since I’m passionate about the course material. It’s just a matter of personal interest

^ Based on the OP’s initial thread, I don’t think that he/she is all that passionate about MMSS, rather he/she is just asking what is the best combination of majors and certificates to get him/her into mgt consulting upon graduation.
