Laser printers are getting smaller and smaller, many of them can fit on your desk now.

ariesathena, I don't think it was because it was the PDF file since it printed pretty quickly at the beginning. And HP support confirmed what we discovered, not to mention there have been a few people that have complained about it. Of course, HP might have fixed the problem already or it could of been that it was too warm... I have no clue, just passing what I experienced.

Okay, thanks.

I tend to print out big files all at once (like all of my typed notes from the semester - over 100 pages), or my outlines (50ish pages, but just printed out one which topped 100), and there was never a problem. Maybe I got lucky. The old printer (which broke when I dropped it - grr to my klutziness) was from July of 2004, and the new one is a few weeks old. Maybe it's one of those problems that comes up in a certain batch of printers, and I got lucky.

It's a big improvement over the old one, which was a HP Deskget 612C. On anything but draft quality, it printed out less than a page a minute. Can you imagine my panic when it did that, when I was printing out senior projects which were 20 pages long? Hence the laser jet.

Anyway - good advice all around.

I doubt you will need the 3 in 1 often enough to justify its added size and cost.

Just get a better printer, somebody will have a scanner if you really need one to borrow.

unless you need to borrow it at 3am for your paper you have to get done by the morning...

I have one, and it was definitely worth it. Though many people don't. It's also nice to be able to make a copy of something w/o going all the way to the library.

bump

I have to buy a printer myself in a few days (I have to pay to use a school printer) and I was wondering if anyone's opinions have changed in the past month, as well as any new opinions. Thanks!

The HP PSC 1315 All-in-One, or some varition is probably best.. if you want to scan and copy, which I certainly think would come in handy. I'll probably get this one. Just depends on whether or not you want card readers. We got the 1210, I believe it was, with our new computer at home a year or so ago, and I love it.

This one, the HP PSC 1600 All-in-One, is good too. My dad has it. I think it's a bit nicer than the others, but it's bigger.

I don't really know what to recommend in terms of just plain printers, tho.

HP 1200 series all in one - 75 - 129 (with card slots) - size of a boot box - cheap - easy to use

I'm definitely getting an all-in-one, copy and scan abilities are extremely handy to have. What's a good one that's small in size for a dorm? Is the one PandaSage posted small? The one I have here at home is way too big.

It's the smallest one I've seen. I don't really see how they could make them any smaller, without sacrificing scanning/copying ability.

Just go to Walmart or Best Buy or something and look at them. That's the easiest way to tell for sure.

I've decided what I'm going to get: Samsung SCX-4100. It's an all-in-one B&W laser printer with scanner and copier. Buy.com has it for $169 before a $50 rebate. There's an even better $70 rebate for buying a $62 toner cartridge as well!

I bought the Canon Pixma 780... really nice printer/all in one. I know this sounds odd because most people don't even think of faxing much, but I seem to fax stuff ALL the time. So... that was something I wanted in my all in one. I think I paid 250 with an extra set of ink cartridges(5 of them)

I had bought a cheaper laser printer in June and after using it for a while, I just wasn't happy with it and returned it. IMO the lowest end of any type of electronic is not what I want... and to afford a laser all I could get was the cheapest end.

for a laser printer deal:
Newegg deal: Go to this Samsung ML-2010 Laser Printer link, select one of the keyboard/mouse sets in "combo" section and add them to your cart. Price in cart is $128 + $15 shipping = $143. Use promo code "sam2010" for $40 off, and your shipped cost is $103. $50 rebate on printer gets the final price down to $53.

thanks to fatwallet

Go for an HP all-in-one...the are wonderful (color/black white/photo/scanner/copier)
