Best route to top 20 college?

I will be starting at a small, low-rep 4-year college this fall (Oakwood University, look it up if you like), but would like to eventually move to a larger, more prestigious university by transferring: Vanderbilt, Cornell, possibly Brown? I realize that this would be a GIGANTIC jump, but would appreciate some advice on how I could make this possible.

High School stats:
National Merit Outstanding Participant
3.0 GPA
Wrote for city newspaper as student writer
No honors or AP courses because my high school didn't offer them
29 ACT score - only taken once (Should I take it again in college?)
SGA Public Relations Officer

I don't have a major and am going in Undecided, taking general coursework.

If any of you need more information, please just ask. Need clarification and advice on a way to realize my goal.

Are you Adventist? ^O^

Anyways, I’d retake the ACT if you want a chance at Vandy. Due to your GPA, all of those schools are super reaches. I’d still go for it.

Perhaps research more notable schools than Oakwood where gaining admittance is easier.

Yes, I am Adventist. Also Black.

I don’t mean to sound negative, but your current GPA, EC’s and hooks are far reaches for any Ivy, top 20, perhaps even top 50 University.

If, however, you were to nail a 4.0 GPA at your local University and accumulate at least 1 year’s worth of coursework pertaining to your degree, you may become a solid candidate.

Interesting! Mother wants me to attend Oakwood or some other Adventist Uni.

How is it there?

I’ll be going to Calhoun this year. Where did you go to HS?

I want to transfer to Emory because Vandy doesn’t offer Business Undergrad degrees.

But these answers will help me out too. My HS GPA uw was 3.67 and weighted was 3.81. My ACT was low (26) so I’ll need to raise that. I had a bunch of EC’s though.

@denominator: Thanks for the honesty, it’s what I’m on this forum for. Do you think it would be best to transfer after 1 year or 2? Should I get involved on campus while I’m there and accumulate some ECs? Also, should I go for a higher score on the ACT by taking it again in college?

@alexissss: It’s okay. Most people come here for the “Oakwood experience” more than anything else. There are lots of opportunities for grad school here, though. Lots of recruiters for grad programs come through, especially for medical schools.

@esai23: Went to high school at Oakwood’s academy, Oakwood Adventist Academy, literally across the street from the college. I’m looking to transfer because I want to double major in English and Economics, but Oakwood’s English program is far from the strongest and its Economics program is nonexistent.

Bump - bump

Bump - bump

Buuuuuumpp. Is anyone there?

At least one year of coursework would be ideal to prove your worthiness as a student… But the longer you get awesome grades the higher chance you have of transferring. Make sure you take courses that are towards your degree though! Don’t make the mistake of taking easy courses for funsies.

Retaking the ACT or SAT is never a bad thing. I am set to be taking the SAT here in awhile and I’ve been active duty military for 3 years… And never underestimate the power of a few good EC’s!

Good luck :)

Posted this on another thread, but thought I should post it here too. Thoughts? Is this a good start?
