Hello!
I really need help improving my math score. It's heavily bringing me down, I can't seem to improve it. In the March SAT I got 590 (I improved 130 pts from the PSAT, but it's still terrible.) I don't know what to do anymore, I've practiced incessantly using the BB and I always manage to get 4-5 wrong per section. Once I review it, I understand them and they seem relatively simple. Any advice or books? I have Dr. chung's but that pointless to look at unless I'm scoring above 650. I need strategies since the actual practice is done with the Collegeboard's prac tests. Thank you all : )

Kahnacademy has some really good explanations for the BB math problems. If there are any that you still don’t get or want a faster method to solve, I’d watch it on his website:

[SAT Preparation | Khan Academy](SAT | Test prep | Khan Academy)

Keep in mind his videos follow the old SAT Official Guide, but this is how they translate:

Old BB –> New BB
Test 2 = Test 4
Test 3 = Test 5
Test 4 = Test 6
Test 5 = Test 7
Test 6 = Test 8
Test 7 = Test 9
Test 8 = Test 10

I really don’t think there are any good math books. Once you know all the material, you just have to practice, and the BB gives you the most realistic practice.

I would use released tests, or barrons

While there isn’t just one book that can bring up your math score, there are a few good ones that I reccommend. With your score of 59, there is great room for improvement. First, stop using the blue book right now. Use that later on after you’ve prepped extensively. You have Dr. Chung’s, great. Save that for later, too. Begin by using Kaplan’s Math Workbook, and then use Barron’s after you’re through with Kaplan. Barron’s is harder, but hard is helpful. After you’ve mastered that, move on to Dr. Chung. By now, you should be able to see an improvement of about 200 points or so. Dr. Chung should get you somewhere into the mid to high 700s. Now, just do math questions from the blue book. This is where you use it, at the end, only to practice. Anyways, this is only my suggestion, but I found it works quite well. I wish you luck!

Thank you all for the great suggestions, I’ll try it! :)

PWN the SAT math guide! I’ve been using it as one of my summer prep books, & though I’ve only just started using it, it’s funny & easy to understand!! Love :)

Thanks cocomelon! I’ve actually coincidentally started looking at it. He posted a diagnostic test on here and it’s quite helpful. I’m just afraid that that guide is for people with higher scores, say 650+, what do you think?

I’m not too sure about thehigh score part, but I got the book because I consistently get a 700 on practice test math tests in the BB…sorry that wasn’t very helpful! but I love the book!!

Blue Book is the way to go but Gruber’s is helpful if you really need help reviewing concepts.

Thank you all.
What i’ve started doing is reviewing all my mistakes and redoing the tests. I’ve also been on PWNTHESAT and KhanAcademy and It seems to be helping. We’ll see when I take a practice test toon (:

I looked at every math prep book there is and found the Powerscore SAT Math Bible to be by far the best book for preparing for the math section of the SAT.

thanks, did your score improve?

Dr. Chungs, 700 -> 800

Sent from my HTCAmaze4G using CC

I agree with you. I don’t think theres any great books out there. However using Kahn academy together with the SAT guide really did help me more than anything. It was like having a tutor.

I would beg to differ. Bob Miller’s ‘Clueless’ series is the best. If you want, I’ll mail you a Pdf.

Should I still get Gruber Complete Guide for math in 2014? (2009 book)
