Sure, one of the best, but don't forget about Stanford and Caltech.

Pomona is better than HMC, duh. :)

1.) Caltech (but should be separate since it only science)
2.) Stanford/ Berkeley
3.) UCLA
4.) USC

O RLY?

You and your campaign to get people to think of Caltech as more than just the sciences/technology.

You still have to take the core. *All *of it.

So? I think that's a GOOD thing. I think if more social scientists actually knew how to run and freakin' interpret regressions then we might see some higher quality political science.

who cares- some small colleges here & there

You also have to take core at most art schools
If that’s the case, I want to revise my list. :)

1.) Caltech
2.) Stanford/ Berkeley
3.) UCLA/ California Institute of the Arts
4.) USC

But those cores tend not to be intensive mathematics, intensive physics, intensive chemistry, and intesive biology.

Ya, those are all sciences, that’s why I said it should be separate because it’s all about math, physics, chem and bio. Just like Art schools are all about Painting, photography and whatever else they do at art schools. ;)

No one has mentioned Deep Springs College, but it is clearly one of the most selective schools in California (and nationwide). According to collegeboard.com:

V SAT, 50% range: 750 - 780
M SAT, 50% range: 700 - 750
% admitted: 11

Haha, I was just about to. Since its admissions process and type of college is so different and obscure though, not many people have heard of it.

This is for undergrad (in no particular order):

Stanford
Cal Tech
Deep Springs
UC Berkeley
Claremont McKenna
Pomona
Harvey Mudd
UCLA
USC
UCSD
Occidental
Scripps
Pepperdine
UCI
UCD
UCSB

In California, the ONLY schools that apparently get ANY respect (irregardless of whether they actually provide QUALITY education are)

Stanford
Cal Tech
Berkeley
UCLA
USC
UCSD

Apparently, all the other schools in California are considered garbage....

UC Irvine, UC Davis, UCSB, and Pepperdine are all also very good schools that are for some reason, severely disrepsected b/c of their lack of prestige and brand name reputation.

It depends on who you're asking. Plenty of people respect Pomona and Harvey Mudd, for example, and people that matter (adcoms at graduate and professional programs, for instance). They deserve more respect than they get from the average person.

True that Pomona College and Harvey Mudd are two other excellent universities as well. I should also add in Claremont McKenna.

But those six schools I mentioned appear to be the only ones that get real repsect both from laypeople and the elites b/c of their brand name recognition. Pomona College, Harvey Mudd, and other top California LAC's don't get much respect from laypeople (and many other elitists as well though some do respect those LAC's) b/c of the lack of brand name recognition.
