Hey, I am a senior high school student and I’m trying to know which California state university has the best aerospace or mechanical engineering program.
Cal Poly SLO would be the #1 CSU followed by San Diego State, Long Beach State and Cal Poly Pomona.
What are your stats? All these schools are very competitive especially SLO
I have an SAT score of 1020 and my high school GPA is around 3.6 out of 4.
Other than Cal Poly SLO, the rest of the Cal States use the eligiblity index and major for admission purposes.
You first need to calculate your CSU/UC GPA (capped weighted) for the CSU’s (a-g courses 10-11th grades only).
https://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/
If you are not sure which of your a-g HS courses get the extra honors points, here is the link. Type in the your HS name and it will show all UC approved courses (taken 10-11th only) that will give you the extra honors points in the calculation.
https://hs-articulation.ucop.edu/agcourselist#/list/search/institution
Once you have your CSU GPA, then calculate your Eligiblity index: (CSU GPA (capped weighted) x800) + (SAT scored)= EI
An EI of 4100+ can be competitive for SDSU
An EI of 4000+ can be competitive for CSU Long Beach
An EI of 3900+ can be competitive for Cal Poly Pomona.
The EI thresholds due fluctuate from year to year so depending upon the stats of the in-coming Freshman class they could higher.
I can tell you that based on your SAT score, all these schools will probably a slight Reach to Reach.

SLO uses 9-11th grades for the a-g courses so plug your 9th grades into the calculation to get your CP GPA. No more the 8 semesters of Honors points are still given for the CP GPA.
SLO uses MCA score points for the admission decisions. Here is a link for an explanation of how to calculate:

Again based on possible CP GPA and test scores, SLO will be a High Reach school.
Average CP GPA was 4.16 and SAT was 1467.

The only other CSU that has both Aerospace and ME is San Jose State.
You need an EI of 3800 for Aerospace and 4000 for ME.
If you are local to any CSU’s then you get priority but it does not guarantee admission to impacted majors. Take a look at the other CSU’s that offer ME: Chico, Northridge, San Francisco, Fresno, Fullerton, LA, Sacramento

For the apparent rigour of your classes (you are in physics C and calc, right?), why is your SAT score not reflecting that? Have you tried the ACT/resat the SAT/prepped etc? Your SAT scores will keep you out of any engineering program that might be considered selective. What are your AP scores so far?
Yes, why is your SAT so low? What is your math score?

but what are my chances of admission if I finish my high school with a GPA of 3.6/4 and an SAT score of 1020 ?
[/QUOTE]
It doesn’t matter what your stats will be when you finish high school. You’d be applying within a few weeks! Calif publics use your grades from soph and junior years. Go to the CSU and UC websites to calculate your GPAs.
CPP, Chico, Sac and Northridge should certainly be on your ap list.
good luck
I’m in UC Berkeley and in the Army reserves right now studying Civil Engineering. I’ve heard from a lot of my classmates that it has great engineering programs for CS, chemical, etc.I got in UC Berkely with a high SAT score. Just wanted to point that out for you. Check out Berkeley. We got a great debate club here as well and a lot of engineering students like me take it to improve their speaking skills for when they’re employed and have to pitch their ideas to each other and their boss.
Good luck!
@cereyes88: The average SAT score for UC Berkeley overall (not major dependent) was 1480. This poster has a lot of serious catching up to do to be at the average SAT score. Also the poster has not come back with their UC GPA which may be under the average of 4.2. Definitely a Reach school.
I’ve did the SAT once last May, I couldn’t focus 100% on it cause I had the AP chemistry exam 2 days later. I’m taking AP calculus AB this year.
So what are your AP scores thus far? The point is for ANY eng, your SAT is a problem unless you have some amazing math/chem/bio/physics scores to actually show on your application. In reality, the focus should have been on your SAT over the AP chem. Are you sitting any standardised testing again? It is getting very late.
