Best strategy when Cal Poly is our #2 choice, while waiting on Berkeley appeal decision

Is my understanding correct that we will have to accept Cal Poly by May 1 and pay, then wait till June 15 to hear from Berkeley.

Do we have to pay tuition AND dorm by May 1?
Is our payment non-refundable?
What is the minimum we could pay to Cal Poly before Berkeley decision?
Any other strategic advice you could share?

Thank you,

You should absolutely put in your acceptance deposit by May 1st… This is almost certainly non-refundable. It looks like Cal Poly does encourage you to make a housing deposit early as preferences seem to be on a first come, first served basis…so if a particular housing choice is important, then you should do that also - call to see if this is refundable…

Cal Poly does not require an acceptance deposit or any down payment for tuition until August or September. Housing deposits are already being accepted and housing assignment are made in the order the money (deposit) and application was received. So, in order to increase the probability of getting the dorm/apt you want, you should go ahead and put in you housing application/deposit as soon as possible. It is refundable until sometime in August.

You also should go ahead and hit the “accept” button (Student Intent to Enroll) before May 1st to secure your spot at CP. There is no cost to do this, but be sure to inform CP promptly if you end up changing your plan.

@ralph4 Actually there is a fee. It’s the intent to enroll deposit

@stevoleeto - Interesting. I had kids accept (submit their intent to enroll) at CP in 2007, 2009, 2012, and 2013, and we never had to pay a fee associated with intent to enroll. If there is one this year, it is new.

@ralph4 @stevoleeto My daughter did not have to pay a fee when we SIR’d this year. I was pleasantly surprised as we had to pay $100 for our son at UCD in 2010. Then I saw the housing deposit that’s four times what we had to pay at Davis and just about fell out of my chair ha ha
