Looking for some input...D is Jr. and interested in psychology. She is a solid student,93 avg, just took the SAT so we have no grades on that yet, some EC but nothing outstanding. We need a financial safety, ie SUNY, for her. She will not apply to New Paltz because her sister is there. Don't think she'll get into Geneseo. Any suggestions?

Check out Oswego. Not sure about the psych. dept. in particular (used to be considered good, back in the day), there are many good programs. If she does well on the SATs she may have a chance for a nice merit scholarship.
SUNY Oswego - Financial Aid Office: Merit Scholarships

What does your D intend on doing with that degree after graduation?
You are extremelly limited in what you can do with a BA in it.

Stony Brook has a huge, highly-rated psychology department.

Thanks for the input....we were just discussing Oswego the other day, I will look into it alittle further. Stony Brook is out...too large. She definitely wants closer to 5K students. As far as what to do with a BA in psych, she is planning on going on to grad school, possibly MSW, or futher and become a therapist. Maybe Stony Brook for grad work??
Anyone familiar with Brockport? Looks like they have a 5 yr. BA/MA program.

I heard that Binghamton is really good but the only problem is that you can’t get any merrit scholarships till you are done with i think your first year

Well this depends. They all have relatively good programs but which one do you live closest to? This may be solved by location, however I have heard about Oswego and Stony Brook and they seem to have good programs.

Vahevala: Don’t count out Geneseo. Average GPA is a 94 so your daughter atleast for GPA is right there. Remember, they admit students with lower GPAs and SATs below there average of 1340.

The Psychology program at Geneseo is good. I have a few friends and colleagues who graduated from the program.

stony brook is big but you don’t really get that feeling when you’re there. you wouldn’t be able to tell there were 20k undergrads from walking around and going to class. tell her to reconsider because stony’s psych department is ranked in the top 30 for undergrads (just google undergrad psych rankings and you’ll find more info). i am (was?) a psych major at stony and i can tell you that the profs in the program are really successful and will definitely keep your interest in psych.

This thread was started last March, hopefully Vahevala’s D has decided upon her potential schools…
