Bing is at the top. That's all there is to it.

I agree about the shame of the SUNY system for not achieving its goals. However, for it does deliver value for the dollar, particularly for state residents, and particularly for merit aid. One of the big problems I see with the SUNYs is that they hardly have anyone from out of state. Also there is no real central flagship school. Buffalo actually comes the closest to that and is underrated in my book. If you have specific programs you want, you should research them in the SUNY handbook as specific schools offer specific programs. I noticed that Buffalo and Fredonia, for example, are the only two offering Musical Theatre Programs. If other performing art are your interest, Purchase is a distinct possibility. Geneseo is an excellent value for someone looking at pricey LACs but can't afford the tab.

I never really got a feel for how hard it is to get into Binghamton. A number of S's peers did get in from his catholic high school, and to Albany as well. Those who were looking at political science/govt type programs seemed to favor Albany whereas the liberal arts types went to Binghamton. If you are a NY resident and are looking for financial safety, SUNY is certainly there. They are located everywhere. My observation has been that Buffalo is pretty generous these days with merit aid if you beat their midrange stats.

SUNY Stonybrook is definitely better on the graduate level but these very prestigious professors that make it a good graduate school still teach on the undergrad level.

Stonybrook was one of my top choices for graduate school in musicology.

for non-science major, none of the SUNYs are great but Geneseo is best for liberal arts and Binghamton comes next.

IMHO the SUNY system and the Four Public Universities are mediocre and deserve improved leadership and funding.

"I don't know why people would put Geneseo on top of Bing... Bing is the hardest to get into and has the brightest students."

I would definitely rank Geneseo above Binghamton. Geneseo is also more selective than Bing, probably because it's smaller. I've heard many instances of people who get into Bing and Providence and similar schools and are rejected at Geneseo. Geneseo students are equally bright, if not brighter.

As for 'hard to get into'... the OP is applying ED to Cornell. Why would Binghamton be something to worry about? It'd still clearly be a safety.

I may be biased because I'm a future English/art major and see things from that perspective. But I applied to Bing as my definite safety--it's a much easier application than any other ones. It's common app, and you can easily recycle something for the extra essay.

"Bing is a safety school for NY (mostly NYC and LI) students who applied to top notch schools (think Ivy's and top LAC's) and didn't make it."

There are MANY schools between top-notch Ivies and LACs and the SUNY schools. Providence, Lafayette, and others.

Bklyn2Cornell--you mentioned wanting to become a doctor in your other posts. For that I'd actually recommend Bing (since, trust me, it's easy) and Stony Brook. Geneseo would be geared toward more humanities. Stony Brook has a pre-med program that you may be interested in.

The valedictorian last year went to Stony Brook's pre-med honors program, due to financial reasons. Johns Hopkins just didn't give him enough aid. But he says some of the kids at Stony are brilliant, though, kids who have patents, etc.

Ye, im doing ED Cornell. I just needed to eliminate 2 out of those 4. So far, i eliminated Buffalo. But whats next: Geneseo or Stony?

Stony, because you're on the med track.

There is nothing safety about the honors college at Stony Brook. They get about 2,000 + applications, and of that accept 50. Of the 50, 5 or 6 are accepted into the 8 year med program. The Average SAT (old version) is about 1480. All are in top 10% of high school class or higher.

Many of the kids are quite bright. Well respected in med and law school admissions.

Ye...even then, Geneseo is in the middle of nowhere and it is too humanities oriented, i like science but i love history too....and government and all that stuff, so i like balance...but focus...geneseo sounds too artsy

I never said Stony Honors is easy. Its not at all. My friend got in though. 1290 SAT, but valedictorian, not much extracurriculars.

Artsy Geneseo would be good for someone like me, but probably not for you. I agree with olddoc that Stony's Honors program isn't a safety. The school in general would be a safety, but breaking into the honors program is a hair more selective. But I'm guessing that if you're potential Cornell material, you wouldn't have a problem getting in.

This whole selecting safeties is so frivolous for me...all i want is Cornell...nothing more...if i dont get in...i will cut my wrists, lol JK

What about U Mich as a safety? I was considering that one earlier in my college search, but eliminated it because it required too many essays and Bing's form was sooo easy.

Yeah, don't stress over safeties. I freaked out over U Mich's app and never even applied. Just focus on Cornell, but have a balanced attitude toward it. Like, be prepared for anything.

U Mich is far away...I confined my search to skools in the Northeast, basically from Mass to Maryland, and west to PA. I confined my list from 32 to 20. Would you like the list?

sure, wouldn't hurt. I have senioritis and AP Chem to look over... meaning, procrastination time.

My college doesn't accept AP Credit!!! WHOOO!

Most good colleges dont accept AP credit...What college r u going to?

Heres my list:
-Cornell
-NYU
-U of R
-Boston U
-Brandeis
-JHU
-Brown
-Vassar
-Georgetown
-Colgate
-Union
-GWU
-Lehigh
-Syracuse
-U of Pittsburgh
-Bing, Stony, Geneseo (will prob delete)

I'm going to Amherst College (I'm getting into the habit of adding "college" since otherwise it always gets confused with U Mass, at least around here anyway). But Swarthmore College is really good, and they accept a LOT of AP credit.

I'm assuming you're good Cornell material. In that case... NYU, BU, Colgate, Pittsburgh, and Syracuse could even be safeties. Maybe even Vassar, I think. Even though they're respectable schools...I'm not saying they're bad.
