Best time to apply to Pitt?

My current stats aren't that good, I am in-state with a 3.4 UW and 3.5W GPA. My ACT is a 27, I only took it once,
I plan on taking it again. My question is should i apply to Pitt now and send my first marking period grades (comes out next week), which would bump my UW GPA to a 3.5 or should I wait until i retake the ACT is December 13th. I'm confident I can get at least a >29 on the ACT. As for the rigor of my curriculum, I have taken 2 AP classes not including senior year and 8 honors classes.

The earlier the better! You can always send your new test scores later.

Keep in mind that Pitt only reviews ACT English, Math, and Writing. Can you tell us your individual scores on each section of the ACT?

Yes, 23 English, 27 Math and 6 on the writing.

That will most likely not be high enough for admission to Pitt’s Main Campus. Your GPA is also below their weighted average of 3.9. If you apply now, you will probably receive a request for additional information including your December ACT score and senior year grades. There were people with higher GPAs and test scores than yours that were requested for additional information before receiving an admission decision. Good luck!

NO. This is the second time I’ve seen this sentiment and it’s simply NOT TRUE.

If you are not trying to get any scholarship money (which is the only reason I would encourage an early application) definitely WAIT until you have the strongest application package as a whole before applying. Retake your ACT and increase the score, have a strong first quarter of senior year to make your transcript/GPA look better, but do not feel the pressure to apply early with a weak application! It is better to apply with stronger numbers and be confident than to apply with weak ones and hope they ask for better numbers instead of just outright rejecting you.

Outside of scholarships, you can apply to Pitt at any point up until March-ish. So hold off until you know you have better ACT scores in your hand.

For reference, 40% of accepted students had an ACT composite of 30 or higher, and 56% had a composite between 24 and 29. The 25th percentile (lowest 25% admitted) ACT composite was a 26, so you’re sitting pretty low with a 27.

Your GPA is also much below the average weighted GPA last year (3.97).

I would work on getting a better score and also doing the extra application stuff (essays, letters of rec, send in a resume of activities).

Good luck.

@Keith303, we do operate on rolling admissions, so you have some leeway for the time that you apply and it is absolutely up to you to decide when you are comfortable applying. You are certainly able to submit now and let us know that you are waiting on further test scores, or you can choose to wait and apply later when you feel you have gathered all the materials you want to send us.

But I do want to stress that if you are interested in being considered for scholarships, you should apply by January 15. Your application package will automatically be reviewed for merit-based scholarships.
