Also the ONLY reason i want to move away from my home is because I want to kinda be away from home. From what i heard so far from you guys i should choose the closest CC but I also want to go to a CC where i can dorm/apartment mainly because I dont want to come home everyday.
I also have tons of financial aid, does anyone know a school with some nice aid?
Im a senior with 3.5 gpa from my Highschool not college.
Im so dumb i wouldve made it into any CSU ._.
Then you should go to Santa Barbara city college.
You have a way better chance of transferring to a UC from a CCC, rather than a CSU. But UCs only take junior transfers.
What major(s) are you considering?
For majors with relatively common requirements (e.g. common humanities, social studies, and science majors, and business), the frosh/soph courses tend to be widely available at CCs, according to http://www.assist.org . For majors where the frosh/soph courses vary more between UCs and CSUs (e.g. engineering and CS), you may find that some CCs are better than others at covering them. Usually, those closer to a UC or CSU tend to have better coverage, because the are more likely to just copy their syllabus of the nearby UC or CSU.
With a 3.5 HS GPA, your UC application list should have included UCSC, UCR, and UCM. Did you apply to any other four year schools (e.g. CSU, private, out-of-state)?
Don’t do that man. You’ll be wasting so much money. I was in the same situation as you, young kid just wanted to leave. It’s not the best financial decision and to be honest being fresh out of high school we weren’t the brightest. We see all our friends go straight to 4 years and live these “awesome” lives and we become envious. But the truth is a good percentage of those people have to come back due to financial issues.
Yes, i know you want to leave, but just have light a fire under your ass and get it done in 2 years. You’re out before you know it.
(Transferring fall 2015, graduated HS fall 2013)
@ucbalumnus yea i totally agree i shouldve applied to ucr and ucm and ucsc but fml i ddint… also yea i got accepted to calvin in michigan but i reall dont want to go there
@CrispyJuicy I know man but I dont think i can. And what im doing right now is taking tons of aps so i can maybe finish cc in a year help me out bro
@yeheun Would you have gone to UCR or UCM even if you applied though? I would rather spend two years at a CCC and transfer to a college that you would prefer (not that UCR or UCM are bad choices). I know some people who can transfer in a year, if you have a lot of AP scores that fulfill GEs.
Very few CC’s offer housing options. You would need to find a room or apartment off campus which would be very expensive if you are considering SMC or SBCC. Attend your local CC for 2 years, save the money and then transfer to a UC farther from home.
^^Agree with @Gumbymom. SBCC living costs (from a friend doing what OP wants to do) is > $1000 a month only for living expenses.
@yeheun, post #20 you said you “…have tons of financial aid”? Did you mean “need”? If you meant “need”, it would be prudent of you to stay home and attend your local CC instead of moving out to be on your own.
Thanks for the help guys…but I also have trouble with family and issues like that. My situation is far worse than u guys know. Im an asian kid and my parents are even willing to send me out somewhere
It appears that you are from OOS. Californians don’t use the term, “Cali”. If you are from OOS, then you will be paying a ton of money because California does not fund OOS students.
Yes, if you can afford it, consider SBCC. A lot of kids go there. There is no reason you cannot go there.
hi i was actually born and raised in California. And ya i call it Cali LOL @aunt bea
Also will having a roommate change the cost because i looked into it and it said each month wiuld be 765 and if u divide that into 3 people squished together its only 250 a month.
Haha, born and raised in CA and I say Cali too – sometimes. Just don’t say frisco, lol
:-h born and raised in Los Angeles, I never say Cali. I do say SoCal, Angelena, L. A. native, or just California.
@yeheun I think you can do it. Don’t be afraid to ask for help at the transfer center. Good luck!
I go to Berkeley City College, a school a part of the Peralta Colleges, and frankly, it isn’t the best school. I chose it because it was close in proximity to Cal, and I wanted to be in the area. The “top” CC’s are SBCC, DVC. De Anza, etc., but they may not be the best fit for you.
Look at different campuses (I’ve heard SBCC is really nice), look at their course lists to see if they have the classes you want/need, look at ratemyprofessor.com to see how teachers are in fields you’re interested in at different schools, and factor it all in accordingly.
I’m personally happy going to BCC and would wholly recommend going to your local CC to save the money, but if you really have to get out or whatnot, look at the major CC’s, or at least the ones that offer housing, a good atmosphere, etc.
ALSO: try not to go to a CC where the classes are impacted, if you can! The easier for you it is to get your classes, the better.
